Here’s an bit of an advance peek into Thursday’s column, about the only time John F. Kennedy visited Roanoke.
This was shot at Woodrum Field on Nov. 4, 1960, four days before that year’s presidential election. The newsman holding the mic is Forrest “Frosty” Landon, then a young radio reporter (he went onto become the top news executive at The Roanoke Times, retiring in 1996.
To his right is Charlie Cox, then one of the newspaper’s political reporters.
Kennedy spent about an hour there and it was a mob scene. The column will have photos from the event, as well as the recollections of a bunch of people who were there. So stay tuned!
