Some of you gathering with extended family for dinner today may be dreading the conversation’s potential turn to politics. Fear not!
Steve C already has noted a nifty primer on Salon.com titled “A Holiday Guide to Arguing with Your Right-Wing Relatives.”
But if that proves insufficient, there’s another resource available, chock full of firebrand anti-Obama statements . . . and perfectly polite, factual retorts. Here are a few:
• Myth: President Obama has increased the deficit.
Fact: Since President Obama took office, the deficit as a percentage of GDP has been cut by more than 50 percent. And by the way, if Republicans manage to repeal the Affordable Care Act, that’s actually going to increase the deficit by something like $109 billion over the next 10 years.
• Myth: All of President Obama’s new taxes make life impossible for small businesses.
Fact: President Obama has cut taxes for small businesses 18 times since taking office, allowing them to grow and create jobs. But remember Paul Ryan’s plan? That would actually cost the economy something like 2 million jobs, which isn’t great for businesses of any size.
• Myth: Obamacare is a government takeover of the health care system.
Fact: Let’s be honest — the Affordable Care Act was born out of ideas originally proposed by Republicans. It relies on private insurers and actually strengthens the employer-based health care system that already exists, while expanding the pool of people who are able to buy insurance. Now that it’s a law passed by President Obama, Republicans want to put insurance companies back in charge.
Yada, yada, yada, and so on. There are loads and loads of counterfactual statements, along with responses, available at The Democrats’ Guide to Talking Politics With Your Republican Uncle. Whoopie, they’re even sorted into helpful categories such as Economy, Climate, Healthcare and Immigration.
So have a Happy Thanksgiving, everybody. And don’t let the Fox News hounds ruin your day.
But keep in mind: You can explain it to them, but you can’t understand it for them!
