It’s time for you know who to eat a lot of crow

Note from Dan: Nobody on this blog more loudly and confidently predicted Barack Obama’s certain loss in the 2012 election than Suzie, the flagrantly wrong and conservative regular here. For that reason, I thought it would be interesting to look back at a few of her doozies, and I’m indebted to Dave Hicks for collecting them and passing them along in an email.  All of them are linked below. Dave writes: “So, hozabout a review of merely a small sample of her losing claims / epic failures / severe self-flagellation / unbroken string of losses over the past year and a half?”

Thanks, Dave! Enjoy, everybody!

“I can’t wait until after Romney’s landslide win to repost a whole bunch of quotes from you clowns. I’m saving them and categorizing them to pull out at the appropriate times. It should be great fun.”

“Obama blinked on the tax increase demands. He’s officially history. WoooHOOOO!”

“For Dan’s next contest, I suggest “Possible occupations for Obama after January, 2013″

My entry: Capitol Hill shoeshine boy for the new GOP majority.”

The poster of the 105,000th comment is . . .

. . . Kristen!

We hit the 105,000 mark at 9:43 a.m. Wednesday but things have been so fast and furious on this blog for a few days that I didn’t even realize it.

Congrats, Kristen! Help yourself to a book from Dan’s Bookshelf.

For anyone who wants to know a little more about Kristen, click here.

We’re coming up on 105,000 comments!

We’ll hit that big mark sometime next week, folks.

Thanks to all of you once again for your enthusiastic participation.

As before, the person who posts the 105,000th comment will win the book of their choice from Dan’s Bookshelf.

Good luck!

Sandi Saunders posted the 95,000th ‘approved’ comment

Sandi, who needs no introduction here, posted the 95,000th ‘approved’ comment to this blog Friday at 5:09 p.m.

Which means she wins a prize from Dan’s Bookshelf!

Congrats, Sandi. Please choose a volume and send me your snail-mail address, which I won’t disclose, and I’ll drop it in the mail to you.

Thanks for all the traffic, gonzos. It has been fairly heavy lately (wish I got paid based on that, but I don’t).

Onward toward 100,000!

Closing in on 95,000 comments

In the next week or maybe two, we’ll hit the milestone for 95,000 “approved” comments on this blog, since its inception in March 2009.

And the lucky poster of the 95,000th comment will get his or her choice of a book from Dan’s Bookshelf. In case you haven’t checked that out lately, there are some new offerings on there.

In terms of both comments and page views, this is by far the most trafficked of all the roanoke.com blogs. That’s because of your faithful readership.

Again, thank you all for your participation, your passion, your humor. And thanks to some of you for your command of the facts, and to certain other regulars who provide the rest of us daily reminders of what it’s like to live in an one of those comic book-style alternate universes.

May the best Gonzo blogger take the prize!

The 90,000th ‘approved’ comment on this blog!

Hey folks,

‘Lori’ posted the 90.000th approved comment on this blog at 10:34 a.m. Tuesday. For that, she gets to select a volume from Dan’s Bookshelf.

Congrats, Lori! Email me your selection and snail-mail address and I’ll get it in the mail to you.

In case you have forgotten, Lori posted the 80,000th comment here back in April. Here’s the link where you can find a little bit more about her.

We’re quickly approaching 90,000 comments

We’ll probably hit this milestone in less than a week, folks.

Thank you again for your participation, including all the newcomers who have joined the discussion over the past week on the Sheriff Ewell Hunt thread. It now has the highest number of comments of any thread on this blog.

As in the past, the poster of the 90,000th comment will get his or her choice of a volume from Dan’s Bookshelf.

Good luck to everyone!

‘dave’ posted the 85,000th approved comment

dave post it Saturday at 3:32 p.m.

Congrats, dave! Please help yourself to a volume from Dan’s Bookshelf.

This isn’t the first time dave has posted one of the milestones. He posted #55,000, too. Here’s a little bit he wrote about himself back then:

Thanks for the opportunity to select another book even though I have done nothing to deserve it.

My first name is David, thus my blog name dave. My family, friends and business associates mostly know me by my middle name.

I am a Roanoke native and have never lived outside the Roanoke Valley.  I come from a wonderful, large and loving family and have three fantastic daughters and nine grandchildren who are the foundation of my life.

I graduated from the best state school in Va. ( and the toughest one to get into) with a B.A. and later earned a masters degree in school administration and psychology. I spent 13 years in the public schools as teacher and administrator.

I then left for the business world and have sold real estate, trained agents, and managed an office since then. (I also spent a few years as a part timer on the RT sports writing staff).

I have been active in politics since graduating from college including membership on county and district committees and a brief fling at running for office.

Note from Dan: Here’s some information about Lori, the poster of the 80,000th comment on this blog. The picture on the left is of the sunrise the day her son was born in 2008.

Lori has chosen “Petty Magic” by Camille DeAngelis as her prize. Congrats, Lori! And thanks for your participation.

“A little about me:  I am 34 and have lived in Roanoke all my life. I graduated from Roanoke College, and briefly considered moving elsewhere after graduation, but my friends and family kept me here. Lucky for me they did, or I wouldn’t have met my wonderful husband.

We married in 2007 and welcomed our son 9 months later, in July 2008. (We had a great honeymoon!) I have truly been blessed to have a husband who loves me, faults and all, and to have a healthy happy son who never ceases to amaze me.

I work for two attorneys, whom shall remain nameless.  I enjoy what I do as it’s a small office and I get to work on many different cases but also assist on the business end of things.

My politics lean liberal, as evidenced in my commentary on the blog. That being said, I believe most solutions lie somewhere in the middle of the political spectrum – the market doesn’t have all the right answers nor does the government.

I love to read and cook in my spare time. This year, I am looking forward to learning to preserve some of the veggies from our garden.”

And the 80,000th comment on this blog is by . . . ‘Lori’

The poster who goes by ‘Lori’ posted the 80,000th “approved” comment to this blog at 4:50 p.m. today, folks.

Congrats, Lori! That distinction wins you the honor of your choice a a volume (or another prize) from Dan’s Bookshelf.

As with other posters of milestone comments on this blog, we hope you’ll take the time to introduce yourself to the rest of the crew. Tell us how old you are, your marital status, about your kids (if any), your job, your politics, and anything else you’d like to say.

Send these biographical details to me in an email, along with your choice of prize from the shelf, with a photo of yourself, or of a pet or something else if you’d prefer not to have your mug here.

Congrats again!

About this blog

Metro Columnist Dan Casey knows a little bit about a lot of things but not a heck of a lot about most things. That doesn't keep him from writing about them, however. So keep him honest!

He welcomes your rants, raves and considered opinions, so long as the language is civil (i.e. no four-letter words). He'll read all your posts and may or may not respond.
