Thinking krisply on the Thursday OPEN thread
“It’s simple. Eat well, exercise and get lots of sleep but make sure you indulge occasionally. At my age I think, what the hell, and eat a krispy kreme doughnut!”

“If the world were a bar, America would currently be the angry drunk waving around a loaded gun. Yeah, the other people in the bar may be afraid of him, but they sure as hell don’t respect him.”
Wil Wheaton
It wasn’t like that for most of Sen. John Warner’s tenure in the Senate, eh?
“Sureness is something like a neck brace, which we clamp around our lives, hoping to somehow protect ourselves from the frightening, constant whiplash of change. Sadly, the brace doesn’t always hold.”
Elizabeth Gilbert
“Some 43 percent of voters in union households voted for President Bush in 2004, according to exit poll data.”
Linda Chavez
Do you think a GOP presidential contender will ever get that high of a percentage again? (For McCain the number was 38; for Romney it was 37).
“I am thankful the most important key in history was invented. It’s not the key to your house, your car, your boat, your safety deposit box, your bike lock or your private community. It’s the key to order, sanity, and peace of mind. The key is ‘Delete.’ “

Hey folks, I have a boatload of stuff to do today so I won’t be around this blog much. Have a good weekend!
“The 1928 Republican Convention opened with a prayer. If the Lord can see His way clear to bless the Republican Party the way it’s been carrying on, then the rest of us ought to get it without even asking.”

From left, the ladies who run Carl’s Place: Kathy Tench, Linda Lawrence, Christy Treadway, Robin Surver and Violet Osborne. | Shot by Dan Tuesday in Penhook.
Behold the ladies of Carl’s Place, who do their darnedest to make sure few people stay hungry in Penhook, Va. They run the family diner and local landmark that’s been serving breakfasts, lunches and dinners for 66 years and is open at 6 a.m. 7 days a week — every day of the year except Christmas.
Carl Dalton opened the combination restaurant and gas station with his wife, Mabel in 1947. Carl has passed, but Mabel, who’s 90, lives next store and still bakes pies that are on the menu.
The most popular offerings are the Carl burger and Mabel burger. They’re fashioned from hand-pattied fresh ground beef. The only difference between them is the one named after him is bigger — 6 oz. instead of 4 oz.
The food must be good, given the diner’s longevity. I can only speak for the turkey club & chips, which is tasty and a very fair deal at $5.75. All of their 3-egg omelets are under $6, except for the Western, which is $6.25.
I was down there Tuesday on another matter, doing bit of reporting for a column next week. It’ll probably include some quotes from the gals at Carl’s. I may go back there later and meet Mabel, and do a whole column on her and Carl’s and the women above. They’re a lively bunch!
“There is such a thing as tempting the gods. Talking too much, too soon and with too much self-satisfaction has always seemed to me a sure way to court disaster. The forces of retribution are always listening. They never sleep.”

Philly chicken fudge bites? Really?
“Postwar America was a very buttoned-up nation. Radio shows were run by censors, Presidents wore hats, ladies wore girdles. We came straight out of the blue – nobody was expecting anything like Martin and Lewis. A sexy guy and a monkey is how some people saw us.”
Jerry Lewis
“Mama was my greatest teacher, a teacher of compassion, love and fearlessness. If love is sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet flower of love.”
