“Now they show you how detergents take out bloodstains, a pretty violent image there. I think if you’ve got a T-shirt with a bloodstain all over it, maybe laundry isn’t your biggest problem.Maybe you should get rid of the body before you do the wash.”

Column: Bicycle safety event is way overdue

If you’re curious why Roanoke County is sponsoring a bicycle safety event June 8 at Tanglewood Mall, you should listen to the stories of local lawyer David Harrison.

Twice in the past five years, he has been hit by cars while riding his bike carefully and legally. The first time was on the Blue Ridge Parkway in 2008 when he was bumped off the road by a passing sedan pulling a fishing boat. It knocked him off the pavement and he landed in adjacent grass.

That one left Harrison with some bruises and a busted cellphone. He rode away from the crash, but on the next one he wasn’t so lucky.

It happened on Edgewood Street just off Brandon Avenue Southwest in 2010. Once again, a car bumped Harrison as it passed him too closely; this time he went down hard on the asphalt. He fractured five ribs, broke his collarbone in two places and his shoulder blade in one, and suffered a collapsed lung. Read more »

Walkers are welcome on the Wednesday OPEN thread

“A bully is playing a game, one that he or she enjoys and needs. You’re welcome to play this game if it makes you happy, but for most people, it will make you miserable.”
Seth Godin

Given that bicycles are vehicles, this is an intriguing sign along the Roanoke River Greenway in Salem. You’ve got to wonder if more like it are on the way.

Your daily Letter to the Columnist — April 29, 2013

Dan,

I read your article about the Tea Party forum with interest. I also spoke just last night with Joe McNamara about the candidate forum with the Tea Party.

What you may not know is that the current extremist conservative group that controls the Roanoke County Republican Party will not allow ex-members of the Executive Committee back into the party if they believe that they are not conservative enough. The current chairman is professional political staffer who works for Ralph Smith. He is firmly behind this extremist group and their passion and ability to turn out volunteers. Read more »

Falafels for the Friday OPEN thread

“Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions. Ideas must be distinct before reason can act upon them; and no man ever had a distinct idea of the trinity. It is the mere abracadabra of the mountebanks calling themselves the priests of Jesus.”
Thomas Jefferson

This recently opened place is in Salem, where Apperson meets Colorado Street. Anyone tried it yet?

For breakfast Tuesday, Jeff Mitchell had an egg and some turkey bacon on whole wheat. For lunch he had a cereal-sized bowl of chicken, broccoli and rice casserole — leftovers from Monday. Dinner was baked pork chops and steamed vegetables. His night-time snack was popcorn.

As diets go, it doesn’t seem particularly unhealthy. But Mitchell is. “Fat” is a manifestly inept word to describe him. He’s morbidly obese. Mitchell, 50, weighs around 600 pounds.

He’s an extreme example of the debilitating effects of obesity, a dominant health issue in America. Believe me, you do not want to end up like this guy. He has no quality of life. He can barely do anything for himself.

Except for a two-week hospital stay two years ago when he suffered from kidney failure, Mitchell hasn’t left his house in nearly three years. Even then, an ambulance crew had to squeeze him through the door.

Selfish drivers think the road belongs to them

Your daily Letter to the Editor – April 11, 2013

Few things in this world are free. One is air, and another is the public right-of-way. Anyone can go anywhere in the world in these rights-of-way, excluding interstates, for free.

You can walk, run, ride a horse, wheelchair, scooter, car, truck and, yes, a bicycle.

Some selfish motorists think the roadways are their exclusive domain. This is not true, and it is not harmless to pull up beside a bicyclist and blow your horn or yell and stomp on the accelerator.

Yes, it does startle us. We are concentrating on the road, trying to stay on the edge so you can pass safely. When cyclists traveling at 15 mph wreck, they will be injured or killed. We don’t have 2 tons of metal protecting us. Read more »
