Cage-Free Makes for Eggcellent Publicity

Burger King announced this week that it will start purchasing two percent of its eggs and 10 percent of its pork products from suppliers that do not confine their animals in cages or crates, according to this article in The New York Times.
Those low percentages may not seem like a big deal, but Burger King says that's just the beginning. Once the cage-free movement, if that's what it is, gathers more steam and those products are easier to find and more affordable, the restaurant chain will presumably buy more cage-free products.

Chocolate-stuffed strawberries...a no-brainer

Ahhhh, TGIF. I'm headed to a little girls' night tomorrow night at my friend Nicole's new pad and I've finally decided what I'm going to make.
I've got this clipped out recipe for "Inside Out Chocolate Strawberries."
I can't even remember where it came from, but the credit says Nestle.
What better on a night catching up with the gals than what basically amounts to chocolate frosting-stuffed strawberries?
Yeah. That's what I was thinking, too.

The recipe:

I'm Dreaming of a Genesis E-320 in Dark Blue

It's a cold and dreary day, so it's a good day to fantasize about grilling out on a warm summer night. Looking at this big Weber catalog I just got in the mail makes me feel a little like Ralphie on A Christmas Story.

"You'll burn the filet, kid!"

Hemp Bliss

No, I'm not talking about THAT! I'm talking about a new product for all you lactose-intolerant, nut-intolerant, high cholesterol having folks out there. It's called Manitoba Harvest Hemp Bliss, a line of hempmilk beverages that has just been launched in North America. Apparently, hemp foods are a growing trend in the health food industry.

Sweet Potato Salsa

The other day, a friend of mine suggested that sweet potatoes were on their way out with the fade of winter. Not 5 minutes later, I opened a package from the North Carolina Sweet Potato Commission and found a way to incorporate the tasty taters into some summer barbecues, too.

I say frittata!

Last Friday afternoon, after dyeing about three dozen eggs for an Easter project, I decided it was time to meet a few friends for happy hour in downtown Roanoke. We sat outside and enjoyed a cocktail, then debated where to go for dinner. None of our options really appealed to us that evening. I pictured the inside of my fridge and realized I had a plastic container full of about 15 leftover raw eggs from my project. Can you say 'frittata?'
