What do you know?
Today’s Extra section includes my article about the late chefs Malinda Russell and Edna Lewis.
If you haven’t had an opportunity to read it, click here.
Researching the lives of these two extraordinary women was quite fascinating, and their influences on the world of cuisine are astonishing.
I’m curious as to whether any of you had heard of Russell or Lewis before now? And what were your impressions about the influence of black cooks on the culinary scene before you read this post or the article?
I ask because I found that I knew very little before I began this project. And it seems a little sad that many others are as uninformed as I was.
Also, do you own any cookbooks by black authors? Have you seen any black chefs in or around Roanoke?
Thanks for taking this little quiz. And if you don’t read the article for any other reason, read it for the killer coconut cake recipe at the end!

I enjoyed your article very much. I own The Taste of Country Cooking by Edna Lewis and Mama Dip’s Family Cookbook by Mildred Council. She is the founder and cook of Mama Dip’s Kitchen in Chapel Hill, NC. I started collecting Southern cookbooks a few years ago, because along with great recipes, you get great stories.
The article was really interesting Lindsey! Thank you for sharing such wonderful information! I had not heard of either of these cooks before, but I’m looking to buy some cookbooks by Edna lewis now, and you can buy a copy of the malinda russel book from the university of michigan! I’ve got my order form now! I have a sweet spot for cookbooks I’m afraid! I can’t wait to read these!
Lindsey, I know your turf is Roanoke, but a tiny little piece of New Orleans opened recently in downtown Rocky Mount near the Market. It’s called Bayou Cafe, is open M-F 11 am-8 pm, closed Saturdays, open Sunday 11 am-7 pm. (489-1818). Authentic Cajun food, beignets and Cafe’ du Monde coffee, jambalaya, gumbo, oyster po-boys. Yolanda, the tall, gorgeous black owner/cook, is still tweaking the menu. Fat Tuesday is fast approaching, so drive over and give it a try. It’s Rocky Mount’s newest little secret.
Sounds like a great excuse to get out of the office and go for a drive one day soon, Marion. Thanks!
