A partner who cooks is a treat indeed
Thanks to all of you who commented and/or e-mailed me with suggestions and tips on cooking. And to give myself a little credit, I can boil an egg! (Thanks, Rich!)
Fortunately for me, I have a partner who cooks. And cooks very well! We have unbelievable dinners on the most random nights. An exotic Mediterranean chicken dish on an average, run-of-the-mill Wednesday. Or grilled salmon with a homemade dry spice rub, grilled corn on the cob, salad with strawberries and mangoes on an ordinary Monday. Last night, for instance, we had a Thai dish with tofu, peppers, zucchini (from the market downtown!), rice noodles, cilantro and Thai basil. It had just the right spice and flavor, a tough balance to strike when cooking Thai food. I’ve got leftovers for lunch.
Speaking of Thai food, one of the best Thai places around Roanoke is Red Jasmine in Vinton. The owner actually uses red jasmine rice, which is very hard to come across. I swear I can just eat the rice in curry sauce, or any sauce really. She also makes a very good sticky rice served with mango for dessert. Apparently I’m a huge fan of rice. Actually, just a huge fan of Thai food (and Mexican). Maybe next we’ll talk about Mexican. Yum…now I want Mexican for dinner.

I love rice too!
Thai and Mexican. Two of my favorite things.
Oh, you are lucky!!! I have begged my husband (retired) to learn to cook. He just laughs. I tell him all the time that will be my only requirement from my next mate. He must be a really good cook. (ha,ha)
My husband is an Executive Chef and would rather eat out on most nights. So, I have had to learn to cook well to keep him and the kids home more.
So the next question is… does your significant other cook AND do the dishes? THAT might be something to really brag about!!
Haha … I have to earn my keep somehow! The dishes are all mine, unfortunately!
My husband does cook, and quite well, but somehow breakfast has become his meal to prepare in our house. This is purely by default, as he’s the one to get up earlier in the morning and ends up making our breakfast, which generally consists of oatmeal and a protein (either bacon or eggs, sometimes both!). Then I am the one who cooks dinner. I apologized to him this morning, that he’s always making breakfast, but he said he thinks he gets the better end of the deal as there’s less work involved in prepping breakfast!
