Memories of “Cookin’ Cheap”

There was a nice opinion piece in The New York Times Sunday about the former Roanoke cooking show with Larry Bly and Laban Johnson, “Cookin’ Cheap.”

I missed that yesterday. I loved Cookin’ Cheap. It was one of the first, if not the first shows where Laban poached a whole fish and overcooked it. When he was plating it, one of the fish’s eyeballs fell out. It was so funny. I love the interaction between the 2 of them.

Always made a point to watch Cookin Cheap on Saturday evenings. Laban, Larry, and Doris were great. I remember an episode where Laban was making either pinto bean pie or cake and he really didn’t think much of the recipe. He was so funny.

I loved watching that show! Even though my cooking skills are next to non, I always watched it and got a charge out of Larry and Laban’s antics and their banter. It seemed like they had so much fun everytime. On a side note, I have an old Harlequin Romance book that was based on this show, can’t remember the title right off, but it’s still on my bookshelf and in practically mint condition.

That was a great show! Lindsey maybe you should talk to PBS about doing a new take on “Cookin Cheap” !

Oh my goodness Leisa, that is so funny. I’m guessing the main female character in the book, watched the show.

I grew up watching this and Julia Child’s Show on PBS. Part of my building blocks to becoming a Chef.

Laban was one of my mom’s teachers at Jefferson High. I remember watching the show with her and thinking that they were crazy!

I loved that show when I was growing up!!! I found an old cookbook they made years ago at a thrift store. I couldn’t wait to pick it up and flip through the uhhh.. interesting recipes… lol! :-) It was great!

I found their show while I was recuperating from surgery many years ago, I laughed so hard I almost split my stitches. My young son became an instant fan and would ask every day, can we watch the men who dress up like old ladies and ruin their dinners?
What a charming and sweet program that was! In an age of perfected “foodie” shows Cookin’ Cheap was a true original that we miss! Thanks for enabling us to revisit that wonderful show and cast.

I submitted a couple of recipes which they used. On the one for apple dumplings I put the wrong number of apples down and they had all this dough left…was so funny. I bought that seasons phamplet but I never knew they had an actual cookbook. Would love to get one but I guess they are out of print.
