Tad Dickens tries KFC’s new ‘Double Down’ sandwich [video]

Unless you’ve been in a food coma, you’ve probably heard about KFC’s newest product, a “sandwich” called the Double Down. Instead of bread, the melted cheese and bacon are sandwiched between two breaded and fried boneless, skinless chicken breasts.

Ever since it was announced, a couple of my co-workers have been slobbering with anticipation, just dying (ha) to try it. And so today, on the first day the crazy creation became available, Roanoke.com’s Jordan Fifer went out and bought one. And of course, he was able to convince music writer Tad Dickens to eat it, because Tad will eat just about anything.

If you don’t like to listen to/watch people eating, then this video may not be for you. But if you want to see someone down the Double Down, click the arrow, yo. For the record, Tad says he felt a little “off” later and he chalks it up to too much grease. Ya think??

We have more proof that Tad will eat anything. Here’s some old video of Tad chowing down on a half-pound of baloney: http://blogs.roanoke.com/vlog/2006/03/timescast_33106.html

Yo. Give us a break. I enjoy your blog, but the times give us enough ebonics and “Obama Stash”. Doesnt fit you being a wanna be.

Yeah, the mic was a little close to your beard. But all the better to hear the greasiness.

Is this what you guys do in Features when the boss is away? :)

  12. Dylan | April 13, 2010 at 10:50 am

Good job, Tad! I’m sure that was quite disgustingly tasty indeed. I read where the sodium content in that one sandwich is right at the reccomended daily allowance for a person. All your sodium needs for the day in one sandwich. That may be why you felt a little “off” afterwards.
I hear KFC is offering a sweet deal on those sandwiches, too.
Buy 4 Double Downs, get a free portable defibrillator!

  13. Lindsey Nair | April 13, 2010 at 11:18 am

WOW, Maria. You know, the calories and fat content are a bit lower than expected. Lots of protein, of course. But look at the sodium! That’s absurd! And I find it interesting that the grilled version actually has MORE sodium than the fried version.

Courtney, that’s what Tad and Jordan do. I just posted it ;-)

If you want to taste test cookies, I’m in. Tad, you rock. You roll. You don’t seem to be here today. Hope your stomach is okay!

  15. Liz | April 13, 2010 at 3:00 pm

It was probably the diet Pepsi that made Tad feel off.

Just showed us the truth of fast food nation,
it’s cheap, fast and taste good,
    but healthy,
    not often.

Ok, not that I’m ever going to try either one of these sandwiches, (the one in your article or the one in my link) but I guess it all comes down to presentation. This nasty sandwich actually looks kind of yummy. And, no, that’s not a bagel bun- http://img.foodnetwork.com/FOOD/2008/02/27/PA1207_The-ladys-brunch-hurger_lg.jpg

Don’t want any burgers on my Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Egg maybe, bacon or a sausage patty, Oh Yeah!

  20. Other John | April 15, 2010 at 1:08 pm

Ok, I decided I wanted to try the grilled version, minus bacon, for lunch today. The KFC in Christiansburg didn’t have enough chicken! What?? It’s the lunch rush and they didn’t have enough food prepared…that’s ridiculous…especially when the main ingredient, chicken, is their namesake.

  21. Michelle | April 17, 2010 at 10:17 am

Ha! I have to admit it looks delicious. I’m sure I could talk someone into splitting one with me.

This just in: KFC has decided to make the Double Down a permanent item on the menu. It was supposed to just be a limited time only kind of thing, but according to a KFC press release, they are approaching their 10 millionth sale. I guess people like it!
