Tidbits and a book giveaway
It is time for everyone’s favorite kind of entry on the ole Fridge Magnet (other than when I talk about soda or grilled cheese): a book giveaway!
But first, I’d like to share a couple tidbits of food-related information:
* Remember Sausser Farms, the CSA program that left a lot of customers in the Roanoke and New River valleys dissatisfied? If you recall, the last news on Sausser Farms was that they were planning to shut down operations for three weeks to replant their crops. Well, according to a couple of my colleagues, they’re baaaaaaaaack. They have been spotted on the Roanoke Farmers Market selling eggplant and a couple other things, and they told my editor they’ll have squash and tomatoes soon. I wonder why they didn’t send an e-mail to their CSA members?
* Today’s Daily Deal on Roanoke.com is $30 worth of food and drinks at Martin’s Downtown Bar & Grill for $14. I purchased a deal for 202 Market last week that was worth $30 for just $15, and the process was fairly easy. I just clicked “buy,” entered my information and credit card (it’s secure) and got a confirmation number. The next day, I received an e-mail with a link to print out my coupon. The deals aren’t just for food; they’re for a variety of different services and have included such items as mani-pedis, car detailing and tumbling classes. Check them out.
Alright, since you were patient, here’s the book I’m giving away today: “What’s a Wine Lover to do?” by Wes Marshall promises “334 essential oenophile pointers and tips.”
What makes a white wine white? What is noble rot? What are the best wine regions? What should you be keeping an eye on in the wine world? How do you pair wines with food? This book answers all these questions and many, many more in a fun, snob-free tone.
If you’re interested in this book, I want you to send me a winey (er, whiny) comment about why I should give it to you. The deadline is 5 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) and the winner will be selected from a random drawing. Good luck!

I haven’t been able to find a good wine that I really like. Would this book help? Probabaly. Will I win it? Probably not.
I never win anything,so let me win this great book on wine!
Lindsey, I saw Sausser’s on the Market 2 weeks ago. I was there on a Saturday morning purchasing peaches, eggs and corn from other vendors when I saw them. They were parked in a corner spot by 202 Market. I only saw them because I stopped to buy soap from Belle’s Place Soap. I didn’t bother going over to get any veggies.
Lindsey,
I just moved to Bedford County and was worried a Winer like me wouldn’t be accepted. However, at my housewarming I learned that not only do many of my neighbors love wine too, they know way more about it then me! I need this book to kick my knowledge up a bit!
I fell in love with wine when I lived in Paris. The family I worked for had two wine cellars and the patriarch used to tell me stories about each bottle of wine. I was never able to learn much about the grapes and the flavor/reason behind the wine, but I definitely heard some amazing stories (to be fair, I’m pretty sure he made them all up, but they were interesting none the less).
Why should you give me the book? Because I’d love to actually *learn* about the wines I’ve heard love stories about.
Also… I wants it I wants it I wants it!
Linnnnddseyyyy.. please pick me. My sister in law would love this book. You have to pick me… plleeeaasseeeee!!!
My fiance and I love going wine tasting, but don’t know much about the different variety of grapes, some of the terms, etc. We would love to learn more about this so that we actually sound smart when we are tasting!
Also, as some other people have said, I NEVER win anything. So please, please, please can I have this book?
If I do not win, I’ll wine.
I would love the book, because my son in law is a wine afficianado (sp?) and I am a wine idiot. I love it, but don’t know much about it.
A cup of wine, a piece of bread and thou. No carbs, no sulfites and single. All I can do is read.
You should give the book to me so I can keep stimulating the local economy by buying more local wines!
Come ooooooooon, just pick me as the big winer..er…whiner…or how about just the winner. My dog and I would love to read this book, btw, he is a wineheimer.
