Here is the latest round-up of food-related community events:

THURSDAY, SEPT. 30

Food bank fundraising at Local Roots Restaurant. The front-of-house staff at the Grandin Avenue restaurant will be donating half of their evening gratuity to Feeding America Southwest Virginia (formerly the Second Harvest food bank).

FRIDAY, OCT. 1

Oktoberfest Beer Festival at Wine Gourmet. 5 to 8 p.m. Featuring samples of 12 different beers, as well as some complementary fare, such as brats and roasted vegetables, provided by Comfort Cuisine. And it’s all free! Wine Gourmet is at 2219 Franklin Road in Roanoke. For more info, call (540) 400-8466.

Strengthening NRV Local Foods & Hunger Relief Efforts at the New River Valley Competitiveness Center in Fairlawn. 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is a daylong seminar including three programs on local, sustainable food, hunger relief and how to pair the two concepts so that people in need can have access to nutritious local food. Includes breakfast and lunch. FREE. If you’d like to attend, RSVP by Thursday to (540) 381-8999 or cfnrv@cfnrv.org.
