Ukrop’s is back … sorta

This just in: If you miss Ukrop’s White House Rolls, chocolate tarts and other products, you may be able to find them at Kroger. Say whaaaaaat? At least, that’s what I said.

Yep, it appears as if Ukrop’s is selling some of its signature bakery products under the brand name Good Meadow Homemades. This includes pies, tarts, rolls, cornbread, their Rainbow Cookies and assorted danishes and pastries. According to the website, the name comes from Ukrop family ancestry – they originally came from the then-Czechoslovakian village of Dobra Niva, which means “Good Meadow.”

Also according to the Good Meadow website, the products are available at just about every Kroger in the Roanoke and New River valleys, including Christiansburg, Blacksburg, Salem and Vinton. For a full list, go here and click on “view retailers in a larger map.”

So, Ukrop’s is baaaaaaack. Who would’ve thought? In honor of the occasion, I will share another recipe from the cookbook “Celebrating with Ukrop’s Great Food.” This one’s for Redskin Potato Casserole. It’s a cheesy, lasagna-esque layering of potato slices, ricotta cheese mixture and Swiss cheese. Click the link to see and print the recipe.

But I miss the yellow cake with buttercream frosting! I have to go to Martin’s in Richmond for that now.

    !!!!!!!!!!
Bakery was my second favorite area, just after the salad bar!

If they would pick up the chicken salad, the redskin potato salad and the pimento cheese I’d be a happy camper!

Hi all! I was in the Towers Kroger this evening and didn’t see any Ukrop’s products. Does anyone know if they are only in specific stores right now. If Towers carries them – did I overlook anything?

had those rolls….YUM. Didn’t know they were Ukrops tho. Delish!

That is odd, NT. Did you look in the bakery? I got the impression they might be on a special little display in the bakery. Make sure Towers is on that list on the Good Meadow Homemades website. If it is, maybe they just haven’t stocked it yet or maybe you could ask the manager.

I agree with Amy! I also miss their croissants, two-bite lemon-poppyseed scones, and club quiches. I recently took a cooler with me to a conference in Williamsburg and stocked up on all my Ukrop’s favorites at a Martin’s store there!

Here’s an article about this by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Ukrop’s is based in Richmond.

NT, I haven’t looked for the White House rolls @ the Tower’s Kroger, but at the Bonsack Kroger they are in the deli area, near the fresh breads and deli meats. There’s a display with just the Good Meadow items on it.

Same thing at the Town Square Kroger.

  13. Amy | November 18, 2010 at 4:10 pm

They are at Kroger in the deli/bakery back towards the wine.

Oops – I meant to say the Towers Kroger in the deli/bakery back towards the wine. Been a long day.

The rolls are at the Vinton Kroger, I didn’t notice anything else. I miss Ukrop’s salad bar, the pimento cheese and the deli area, too.

When I wrote to Ukrop’s requesting deli items, too, here is their response:

“ Right now want to do a good job with the 12 products on the Good Meadow table, however, we are sharing customer comments with Kroger.  Our chicken salad receives high marks from Roanokers, so we are hopeful, too, that more of our products will make their way to Kroger stores in your area.”
