Free tickets to Horse and Hound Wine Festival!

Thanks to Danny and Nancy Johnson, the kind owners of Johnson’s Orchards and the Peaks of Otter Winery in Bedford County, I have two pairs of tickets to give away for The Horse & Hound Wine Festival on Saturday, July 9.

The festival will include tastings with Virginia wineries, including Fincastle, Hickory Hill, Leo Grande, Rebec, Savoy Lee, Tomahawk, White Rock, Wintergreen and, of course, Peaks of Otter. There will also be arts and crafts, live music, food, agility dogs, a parade of horses, lure coursing, muskrat races, pony rides, a stick horse race and activities for children in the “Kiddie Korral.”

Part of the proceeds from the event benefit the Commonwealth Search and Rescue team, Bedford Humane Society, All American Mutt Rescue and Brook Hill Farm horse rescue. Guests may bring their dogs, who can try out the agility course and the lure course after the pros have finished with their demonstrations. And all dogs are invited to take part in the muskrat race, so if you’ve got a great swimmer at home you might want to think about showing him or her off! For more information about the event, click here.

For a chance to win the tickets, leave a comment on this post and tell me: What is your favorite food and wine pairing?

The deadline to enter is 5 p.m. on Monday. Since there can be no right or wrong answer to this question, I will pick the winner randomly. Good luck!

This time of year I would have to go with crab louis salad with a vino verde from Portugal.

One of my favorite combinations is a nice Asti Spumante after dinner with a slice of cheesecake with strawberries on top. I lve the cheese and strawberries paired with the sweetness of the wine. Perfect!

My favorite combo is Chateau Morrisette Chamborcin with a giant slice of chocolate cake!

Maytag Blue cheese and Sandeman Founder’s Reserve port. The cheese is excellent on its own, but the port wine transforms it into something truly extraordinary.

I’m no professional when it comes to pairings, but I know what I like. My favorite combo is ribeye and any white wine (not too sweet though).

Conventional? I don’t know. Good? Yep.

I like a moscato with just about anything!!

Let me add that you don’t have to be a wine expert or even name a specific brand of wine to do this, just something general is fine. For example, I love a nice merlot with steak. And I also really like crisp white wines in the summertime with fish, salads or even fruits.
If you want to say you like Boones Farm with cheez doodles, that’s OK by me, too :-)

Cocoa Red wine with chilli and cornbread ;-)

    Summer time goodness.

Lovingston 2006 reserve Merlot paired with slow smoked ribeye and grilled asparagus.

I love Sweet Mountain Laurel with a big slice of Manchego cheese!

I have to go with a nice big salad and a bottle of Riesling. Well not the whole bottle…well, maybe not :)

  14. Mike | June 25, 2011 at 8:14 am

A great steak and a Syrah.

  15. Karen H. | June 25, 2011 at 10:41 am

We love a good merlot with my husbands spaghetti. He makes the best spaghetti and the merlot adds just the right touch.

Grilled mushrooms with a wine sauce on a thick T-Bone and a side of greenbeans.I like having a nice merlot.

We enjoy grilled salmon with a nice glass of chilled Virginia White Table Wine.

I’m a simple guy with simple tastes. A little sun filtering through the shade of large oaks, to enjoy berries — blue, straw, rasp, black; wheat crackers of differing textures; cubed cheeses of a couple of sharp flavors; and a cooled white wine with its hint of blended flavors to touch the palate…much like the woman I share it with who touches my mind.

Shiraz with an grilled eggplant over pasta with a light marinara sauce.
    yummy:-)

I love fresh wild salmon grilled on a cedar plank with a luscious Pinot Noir. A small bite of the richest darkest chocolate makes for a perfect ending, especially if you have a bit of Villa Appalachia’s Rasberry Beret!

  22. Basil Akers | June 26, 2011 at 1:30 pm

Oregon Pinot Noir with Chicken Breast Cordon Kiwi and Blue Cheese

  23. Mike | June 26, 2011 at 2:35 pm

    White Merlot and Chicken Marsala

  24. Neil | June 26, 2011 at 6:04 pm

    Pinot Noir and steak.

  25. Lisa | June 27, 2011 at 8:47 am

my favorite pairing is a chilled summer wine (moscato, white zin) with cupcakes- any kind!

  26. Meg J | June 27, 2011 at 9:09 am

I’m always game for red wine and chocolate. Regardless of the red wine you can always find a chocolate to pair it with and visa versa. But let’s be honest you just can’t go wrong with either one of them :)

  27. Candace Poling | June 27, 2011 at 9:44 am

Bedtime treat of Pinot Noir and Dark Chocolate Velvet ice cream!

  28. Becky | June 27, 2011 at 9:44 am

Peaks of Otter Strawberry Reserves and a nice chair outside to relax while savoring the flavor! Or most any Peaks of Otter wine!

  29. Jeff | June 27, 2011 at 9:53 am

As provincial as it sounds, there are few things better than red sauce Italian and Chianti. Nothing succeeds like success. I pondered something daring, like swordfish piccata and Pinot Noir, but ultimately, I had to go with what can only be considered some form of comfort food classic.

  30. Joe | June 27, 2011 at 9:55 am

Merlot and prime rib, or any good steak.

  31. Tara | June 27, 2011 at 10:16 am

I love Riesling with just about anything, but particularly cheesecake.
