Roanoke City Market Building to reopen after a year of renovation

The Roanoke Times photo

Today’s news package in The Roanoke Times includes an article by Mason Adams about the building’s history and the path to this reopening, Amanda Codispoti’s report on its economic impact downtown and a meet the vendors feature.

Also, don’t miss the panoramic view and video of incoming market vendors discussing their businesses, both by Ryan Loew.

Any thoughts on the upcoming reopening? Which restaurants are you most excited about trying?

I am familiar with Chris Parkhurst and his philosophy of supporting local / organic / healthy food. I can not wait to visit Firefly Fare and see what kind of menu he has come up with. He is such a talented chef – I know it will be great!

    I for one, can’t wait.

I’m most looking forward to checking out Firefly Fare, Queso, Euro Bakery, and Habana Cafe. I know, that’s four places, but all new to me!

Honestly, from the photos, I’m underwhelmed. I assume the infrastructure in the building is better, but the aesthetics are…eh. However, if they reinstall the neon fixtures on the ceiling, I’d be willing to increase my enthusiasm.

Badger Hoo, I’m pretty sure they won’t be putting the neon back up. I think the look they were going for is “clean”. I’m hoping that when it’s full of restaurants and people it will brighten up.

I like the idea of the 3rd floor meeting/banquet area. It does have a “sterile/clean” look to it. Hopefully, something will soften the look when the market place is open. They could have done with out the retail space in the center of the 1st floor. Makes it too crowded. Not sure what is accomplished by that.

I hope it works out, but seems like they lost alot of seating with that big kiosk in the middle, it was hard enough to get a seat before!!!!
