Cook-Out Restaurant coming to Fairlawn

www.cookoutnc.com

Fairlawn is about to get a brand new restaurant, the Archdale, NC-based Cook-Out Restaurant. This will only be the fourth Cook-Out in Virginia; the others are in Richmond (2) and Colonial Heights.

Cook-Out offers a simple menu that includes freshly made, char-grilled hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, pork barbecue and chicken strips. Sides include hushpuppies, fries, and onion rings. I’m told Cook-Out is known best for its burgers and milkshakes. They serve more than 40 different flavors of milkshakes, including banana fudge, cherry cobbler, blueberry cheesecake and all of the traditional favorites. And, as you can see from this drive-through sign, they have Coke and Cheerwine floats.

The business does not have its own website (a spokeswoman tells me they’re working on that), but the entire menu is posted here.

The spokeswoman confirmed the new location but said it probably will not open for 3 or 4 months. She said she did not know exactly where the restaurant will be located. Rumors are already flying on the Internet, of course. On the Facebook page “It’s FAIRLAWN, VA not Radford!!” users were saying they’d heard an old Golden Corral would be torn down to make room for the Cook-Out. So far, I have been unable to confirm that, but I’ll let you know ASAP.

Cook-Out does indeed have AWESOME milkshakes! There’s one in Burlington, NC near my son’s college campus, and he alerted me to the joys of these shakes last year. Pretty good onion rings, too!

Cook-Out is good fast food. Most locations are drive-in or walk-up only, but they do have some sit-down locations. Do you know which this will be? Hope we get one on Roanoke.

Ok this is pretty cool news, and relevant too, since this is about a mile and a half from where I live. I drive by the site almost daily, and noticed that the site had been for sale, then sold and Mi Puerto moved out almost immediately. Yesterday on the way to Kroger, I saw that the building was almost completely demolished (it really was a dump, even when it was a GC…which was the worst GC I had ever eaten at too). I don;t know if we’ll have much we can eat from there, but having a new dining option for the Fairlawn area will be much welcomed, especially as a reprieve from the fast food that dominates the 11/114 landscape.

Have enjoyed the Cook-Out in Eden, NC several times. Need one in Roanoke to go with the one in Fairlawn for sure!!

Oh H3ll yeah! As we say in NC, that stuff’ll kill ya.

I am not sure yet whether it will be a sit-down location. I sent an email to the corporate folks but have not heard back yet. I’ll try to find out. Sounds like the Golden Corral rumor may be true, Other John. At least, something is going on at that site!

The location is more than likely the old Golden Corral building. Driving passed it yesterday It was already half way demolished. This is great news for Fairlawn. I’m sure folks around here were getting tired of Mickey D’s and the rest of the same old fast food joints. I believe they will do well here and having a location near a college town can’t hurt either. From what I’ve read they stay open late from
3-4 AM Sunday – Thursday 4-5 Am Friday – Saturday
That should help folks with the late night munchies.

I can’t even wait! I stop there everytime we are in NC.

Well, it sounds like perhaps it won’t be a reprieve from the fast food domination of Fairlawn, but at least it will add more variety…

I know a while back there were rumors about Ruby Tuesday wanting to locate in Fairlawn where the old Heilig-Meyers furniture store was, next to Sheetz. But something happened and that fell through, and the old store became a church instead. Having some more sit-down options in Fairlawn would be nice, since practically everything in Fairlawn is either fast food, take-out, or drive-up…the exceptions being Subway, Sandro’s, Troy’s, and the River Company.

Is that sign current? Are those the actual prices?

  11. Lindsey Nair | September 20, 2011 at 11:04 am

I am not sure, Kristen, it came from the website I linked to, but Cook-Out doesn’t have its own website so it’s difficult to check prices. I did hear they are very affordable.

Very cool! Nice to have a bit of variety coming to town. Now if the NRV could only get a Pal’s (chain in the Tri-Cities area that’s great), we would be in fast food heaven

I’m dreaming of a chocolate caramel milk shake right now. I go to Cookouts in Winston-Salem often. Very reasonable pricing.

The first Cookout that opened in Richmond still has lines of cars pouring out into the street months after the new has worn off.

YES! WHOOHOO! PRAISE THE LARD! As a proud Elon alum, i can still taste the cajun cheese fries and remember those late night (2am) runs to CookOut! This was that place that all the college kids ate at bc its cheap and delicious. Seriously, Id put their burger up there with Five Guys any day. We need this in Roanoke, asap.

Had a chance to eat at the Cookout in Mt Airy for the first time this past weekend and all I gotta say is that I’m impressed with it. For two of us to eat it was under $10 that included two double cheeseburgers,Hushpuppies, onion rings, and two chicken enchiladas and two large teas. They will definitely be putting a hurting on BK’s and the the rest of competition around them.

Don’t know why no one has commented on this but it looks like the ‘diner’ that was reported to be going in where Hardees closed on S Main in Blacksburg is actually a combination CookOut/CoffeeOut restaurant. Signs are up and the interior looks to be shaping up. Lindsey…can you see if we have an opening date on this yet?

  19. Laura | November 17, 2011 at 3:27 pm

I’ve seen the signs on the old Hardee’s from a distance but haven’t gotten close enough to make out the name or peek inside the store. Wasn’t a coffee shop/bakery type place slated to go in there? When I first heard that plan, I was afraid it would be too similar to Our Daily Bread.

I will see what I can find out.

  21. Earl Mypes | May 17, 2012 at 12:35 pm

Maybe the Steak N’ Shake people will sell their lot on Hershberger Road in Roanoke to the Cook Out people, since it looks like they aren’t going to be doing anything anytime soon there.
