Reader recipes and a Cookbook Giveaway!

CONTEST CLOSED.

Every once in a while, readers send me recipes they think my readers or I would like to try. I’d like to pass along a couple of those recipes now.

First, a shout out to reader Angell Pasley for sharing her recipe for dark chocolate bark with coconut and walnuts. This recipe is easy, great for winter holiday gifts and adaptable. Don’t like nuts or coconut? Omit them and add your favorite dried fruit, such as cherries or apricots.

Next up, a recipe for banana bread from reader Karen Moffitt, who was inspired by this week’s column on quick breads. Karen offered up a great tip: If you have bananas that are overripe and ready for making bread but don’t have the time to make the bread, put them in the freezer. Thaw before using. It’s a simple tip but one that reminds us to never assume other cooks know all of the simple tips!

Alright, here’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for: this week’s Cookbook Giveaway. The sweet-stuff cookbooks continue to roll in, probably in anticipation of the giant sugar binge that is to come this holiday season. This one is “The Cupcake Diaries” by Katherine Kallinis and Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne, stars of the TLC series “DC Cupcakes.” These ladies are the owners of the popular bakery Georgetown Cupcakes in… well, Georgetown.

The book is filled with tips, stories and seasonally-organized recipes for treats such as caramel apple cupcakes, lemon-blueberry cupcakes with citrus glaze, bacon blueberry pancake cupcakes, and berry-infused purple buttercream frosting.

If this sounds good to you, get thee to the comment box and leave me a message on this entry. I’ll pick a random winner on Monday.

Happy Halloween!

would love this! trying to cut a big cake in even size slices is always a pain, and the kids WILL determine that somebody got a bigger piece… cupcakes solve that problem! and they keep me from eating more than i should! :) never realized before – cupcakes are the ideal dessert!

I love baking cupcakes!! There is a bakery in NoVA that I must go to when I visit. It is called Shilla Bakery, and they make asian cakes. The cakes are light and fluffy and not very sweet, kind of like a sponge cake. I love all cakes!!

These ladies (Georgetown Cupcakes) have been generous donors in support of Down syndrome research and the local Buddy Walks in DC Metro. They are lovely people in addition to bakers of delicious desserts.

(Don’t count my post in the giveaway — I do not need any excuses to eat cupcakes!)

  22. Emily | October 29, 2011 at 9:06 am

I would love this cookbook! Related to the post: I always freeze my overripe bananas, but I do keep them in a big freezer zippie to keep them a bit more fresh. Also, I usually don’t even thaw them out completely. I just get them soft enough to squeeze out the end. Looks kind of funny, but works!

  23. Lisa | October 29, 2011 at 12:43 pm

I have had a few cupcake disasters (LOL) so a cookbook on that very subject would be most helpful! :)

  24. Jessica | October 29, 2011 at 3:27 pm

  25. Debbie | October 29, 2011 at 6:24 pm

Kathy, Uptown Joe’s/Blue Collar Joe’s, makes a blueberry, bacon doughnut with maple frosting. It is yummy!! Don’t count this as an entry either.

  30. Janet Wimmer | October 29, 2011 at 10:19 pm

I love to bake and try new things and so I know this cookbook would have lot of new ideas for me to try and share with friends and family.
I also enjoy reading and collecting cookbooks and would really love adding this to my collection since I don’t have one in my collection devoted to cupcakes.

  31. Betsy | October 30, 2011 at 6:14 am

We were just talking about cupcakes yesterday…if there is just two of you, cupcakes are easier to freeze some rather than part of a whole cake…this would be a nice addition to my copy of Small Batch Baking…

  32. Flo Sielaff | October 30, 2011 at 9:46 am

OMG! Just reading “caramel apple cupcakes” made my mouth water.
