Our favorite Thanksgiving sides – revealed!

Poor little Jell-O salad is positively quivering with feelings of inadequacy.

At least it has the relish tray and some sparkling cider to keep it company.

Of the 32 Thanksgiving side dishes that competed in the “Turkey’s Best Teammate” bracket we printed Nov. 2, those were the only three that did not make it into the top four on any of the 60 completed brackets I received.

But let’s face it: No matter how delicious the Jell-O salad, how inviting the relish tray or how fizzy the cider, they just did not have a turkey leg to stand on with heavyweights such as mashed potatoes and herb stuffing in the game.

Even those venerable Thanksgiving foods were edged out – albeit by one vote each – by our ultimate champion: pumpkin pie.

We had some technical problems with the blogs this morning (Wednesday). I apologize for any inconvenience.

Seeing a recipe for curried turkey makes me think of the book & film, “Bridget Jones’ Diary” where family & friends gather after Christmas for the annual “Turkey Curry Buffet”. I may have to watch that later…

Jello salad need not fear….it still has a place on my mother’s holiday table. Sadly, I won’t be in NJ tomorrow to tuck into the “red” flavored Jello chock-full of minced celery and carrots.

Jell-O salad would score high on my list if it were my grandmother’s Jell-O salad. She always made one with lemon Jell-O, Cool Whip, melted marshmallows, crushed pineapple, shredded carrots. We looked forward to it every year. So tasty!

I’m not a big Jell-O fan, but your grandmothers sounds wonderful. I loved my grandma’s cranberry Jell-O salad. Very tasty.

Lindsey, I have a similar Jell-O recipe, but no marshmallows or carrots; the recipe calls for mixed fruit-flavored Jell-O which I have not been able to find lately. Instead I have used orange or lemon. Just dissolve the Jell-O in a large can of crushed pineapple over low heat, let cool and add a small container of Cool Whip. Let it chill to set. Good in the summer, or anytime!
