Update on Cook-Out restaurants

You eagle-eyed readers who spotted a “coming soon” sign at a Hardee’s on S. Main Street in Blacksburg were correct. I have confirmed with the corporate spokeswoman for Cook-Out that they are putting in a restaurant there. This is in addition to the Cook-Out restaurant planned for Fairlawn.

I still cannot get the actual location of the Cook-Out restaurant in Fairlawn. For some reason she could not tell me. But the speculation has been that they might be building a new one where a Golden Corral once operated.

I can tell you that she says both of those restaurants will open sometime in December. To my Fairlawn readers: What are you seeing lately in terms of construction in possible locations?

I traveled to Spartanburg, SC this weekend to see my sister, and Mom and I saw many billboards for Cook-Out restaurants along I-85. It’s obviously a big deal down there, and my sister said it’s really good for a fast-good burger joint.

Thanks again to everyone who offered suggestions as to where we should eat while shopping in Greenville this weekend. I was amazed again by how many chain restaurants and retail stores are located in Greenville. It’s like a shopper’s paradise or something!

Because Mimi’s Cafe was closest to where we were shopping and the traffic was horrendous, we decided to eat lunch there. I had a Caesar salad and a small personal quiche made with four cheeses and sun-dried tomatoes. My sister had butternut squash ravioli while Mom had turkey, cranberry sauce and melted brie on a croissant. All of the food was very good but we were not impressed with the service.

Mom’s sandwich reminded me of the Thanksgiving episodes of “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” that have been playing on Food Network lately. Has anybody seen that crazy episode where the guy is making the homemade turducken? It is just insane. You should catch that episode if you haven’t seen it already.

Is everyone ready for Thanksgiving dinner? Right now, I don’t even have a stove in my kitchen because we’re getting new flooring. Was I insane to schedule this now? Yes, absolutely. But at least Thanksgiving won’t be held at my house this year. Now I just need to find a stove I can borrow…. ha ha!

Yes, it seems as if Cook-out is coming to Fairlawn. I work in Radford and pass the site regularly. I haven’t seen any other new construction in the area to make me think otherwise. I wasn’t in this area when Golden Corral existed, but feel quite sure it’s the same location. If driving on Route 11 towards Pulaski the restaurant is on the left-hand side, same as Kroger, Wendy’s, etc. My friend from Charlotte loves their burgers so I’m eager to try one!

Oh, and the Cook-out in Blacksburg has been “revealed” and appears to be a hybrid burger joint/coffee stop. It says coffee-something on the building, but my mind is a sieve…

Yes, it is going where the old Golden Corral was. I saw one while at Concord Mills so definitely the same building. Don’t know why they’re keeping it such a secret.

The Cook Out burgers are good, but I used to drive 30 minutes out of my way for their amazing milkshakes. They have 46+ flavors made on the spot! I’ll have to visit Blacksburg for one, if only they were coming to Roanoke too.

@Nokieman, well they seem to be moving this way. Maybe we will luck out in Roanoke :-)

Thanks, ladies, for the info. I don’t know if it is that they are keeping it a secret or if the spokesperson just doesn’t want to go and get the specific information I’ve been requesting. She seems harried on the phone.

My sympathies about the stove. We are in the middle of a flooring project that was supposed to be finished two weeks ago and may not be done until December. Most of the living room is in the dining room and half the master bedroom is in the kitchen. I feel your pain. It makes the old Tom Hanks movie “The Money Pit” look less like a comedy and more like a documentary…

Dave, it has been my experience that kitchen remodeling projects never go off without a hitch. I could probably say that about any remodeling project, but we’ve had particularly bad luck in the kitchen.

I’m getting a new kitchen floor, counter top, and gas stove (!!!!) for Christmas…we’ll put in the floor and counter ourselves, but we’re going to need a plumber to run the gas line.

I absolutely cannot cannot cannot wait to cook Christmas dinner on a gas stove. If there’s a way to cook grilled cheese on electric without them either being raw or scorched, 7 years hasn’t helped me figure it out.

I’m not cooking grilled cheese for Christmas…just a comment on my ineptitude with electic.

We are about to replace all of the flooring in our house and plan to rent a POD to put our stuff in. My husband wants to paint the kitchen, living room and main hallway while we have everything torn up. It’s a nice idea, but I don’t know if I can handle it!! Best of luck with your remodel, Lindsey!

Ooh, Kristen, I’m very excited for you regarding your gas stove. I love mine. Would it be better to have one of those electric oven/gas cook top stoves? Yes, but I’ll take all gas over all electric. I just rely on my oven thermometer. Grilled cheese for Christmas actually doesn’t sound too bad, but then again you know how I feel about grilled cheese.
Lori, your project sounds great, too. Those PODs are so cool. I wish I’d invented them!
Hope the remodels go smoothly for both of you.

Sadly, we’re not remodeling in my house right now. The upside is that my husband gifted me a gas/electric stove a few years ago. Gas cooktop and electric over with the option to use convection.

Stainless steel. Blah blah blah. Makes me a happy chip chappy to be able to cook with gas and have an oven that will cook evenly.

I’ll eat in any night of the week rather than fight the crowds jockeying for food that’s been flash-frozen and zapped in a microwave.

Yes, The cookout is on the location where Golden Corral once stood and it appears that you’ll be able to eat in judging how much bigger it is to the one in Mt Airy which is drive thru only with a few seats outside.
