New restaurant at the lake; Lebanese dinner coming up
Feb 3, 2012 Food events, Restaurant news/reviews
Mark Crim, executive chef at Blackwater Cafe at Smith Mountain Lake, emailed me recently to announce that his bosses have opened a second restaurant at the lake called Jake’s Place.
Mark says Jake’s Place is a casual, Caribbean-themed restaurant on the water in the former location of Camper’s Paradise and Harrison’s. I peeked at the menu on their website and saw several interesting items right away, such as crab fritters with Jamaican cocktail sauce and mango slaw, island wings, seafood dip with plantain chips, seafood gumbo, a fish or shrimp po boy, coconut shrimp, jambalaya, mango mahi-mahi and a catch of the day. There are a lot of non-seafood items on the menu, as well.
Jake’s Place: 1041 Harbour Inn Drive, Moneta. Open at 4 p.m. every day except for Tuesdays and Wednesdays, when it is closed.

And now for the best part ( I buried the lead!): the food. Here’s the menu: hummus, tabouli, chicken & rice, grape leaves, kibbee, spinach pie, and dessert.
This is the same church that puts on the Lebanese Festival every year. This year, the festival is scheduled to take place on June 1, 2 and 3.
Have a great weekend!

What’s the word on Paco’s Tacos?

Speaking of Lebanese food, did you notice the restaurant going in down the street where Chance and Maddie’s used to be? Any word on when that will open? I’m excited to finally have something more interesting than burgers and sandwiches on this end of downtown.

@Greg, I drove by Paco’s Tacos on Wednesday night and it was indeed closed, with a “For Rent” sign in the window.
@Bailie, yes, there is a sign hanging out in front of that location (On Campbell Avenue between 1st and 2nd streets). I think it says it will be called “Hummus House,” but I do not have an opening date yet.

@Bailie, I stopped in at that new Lebanese restaurant a few days ago and asked them when they’re planning to open; I think they said in two or three weeks.
