We want YOUR review of Bayou Snowballs in the Roanoke City Market Building
Feb 2, 2012 Restaurant news/reviews
Today’s featured vendor in the Roanoke City Market Building is Bayou Snowballs, which serves New Orleans treats similar to a snow cone that are called… you guessed it, snowballs! They have bunches and bunches of different flavors of this refreshing treat.
We would love to have your short review of Bayou Snowballs as we continue our reader-submitted review project for the newly remodeled market building. We have been soliciting reviews for a different restaurant every Tuesday and Thursday on this blog. Please leave reviews of Bayou Snowballs as comments on this blog entry.

How was the service? The atmosphere/vibe? What is your favorite thing about this restaurant? What still needs work? Would you eat there again?
Keep it short. Try not to write more than 300 words.
We are also still accepting reviews of Allsports Cafe, Queso Southwestern Grill and Habana Cafe.

If you are looking for a great treat you must give this place a try. For one the proprietor is dear, with customer service firmly on her mind. She is always willing to let you try various mixes and concoctions, in order to help you make your choice. The snow cones are not of the Salem F’ar variety. They are literally snow cones. If you were to scoop up perfectly clean, light and fluffy snow (I think we all remember what that is right) and drizzle it with flavorful syrups, that is what you would have. The flavors are unique, varied, and typically taste as advertised. Moreover, flavor combinations can create some surprising concoctions. The sugar content is probably outrageous, but come on, its a snow-cone. The place is a must visit, and come spring I suspect the lines will stretch out the door. But if you have a sweet tooth, check it out now.

My kids love Bayou Snowballs! They always beg me to get a snowball when we are downtown. We have tried: banana, watermelon, key lime, peppermint, grape, orange, and a few I can’t remember. Some of the flavors are too sweet for me, but my kids love them. They can be made with a couple of flavors to tone down the really sweet ones. I really like the consistency of the ice itself, and it is fun to watch the snowballs being made. The snowballs are made in layers so there is always enough flavoring that you don’t run out half way through unlike typical snowcones. The prices are very reasonable, and the owner is upbeat and fun to talk to. The decor is bright, and my kids love the alligators! I highly recommend Bayou Snowballs, no matter what season it is.

I don’t think I can consider myself a customer of Bayou Snowballs. I stopped in to grab a menu when the restaurant opened, and I received a welcome and introduction from the owner. She gave me a brief introduction about Snowballs and her inspiration for opening the shop and was kind enough to offer me a sample. Being willing to try any flavor, she recommended the Coconut, which I gladly accepted. She was correct about it having a different texture and flavor from a typical snow cone, and I was pleasantly surprised. This wouldn’t be something I would regularly indulge in because of how incredibly sweet it is, and there is probably no nutritional value, but it could be a great option during a hot day.

Bayou Snowballs is a great new neighbor in downtown and I’m thrilled that this shop chose to invest on a critical corner for the “tourist flow.” No better shop to give guests a great first impression of Roanoke as a family-friendly destination. A dark bar has its purpose, but Bayou has brightened up a corner that was always a little depressing. I hope that Roanoke will support this G-rated business so it can make it among the PG-13/R businesses that tend to gravitate toward downtown. And the Snowballs are delicious and less than $3, so great place for large families.

I grew up in south Louisiana, and I have been away from home for a long time. I saw Bayou Snowballs just by chance and was intrigued by the gators on the windows before I even saw what was inside, when I went inside I was DELIGHTED! Louisiana snowballs have a very different taste and texture than anything you will find at a fair or festival, or in a convenience store. These are soft and the syrups are very flavorful – everything you would expect from an actual Louisiana replica. I have been to all kinds of confused “creole-cajun” (two VERY different types of food, unfortunately many people don’t know this) and this is the FIRST place I have been to that felt and TASTED authentic! I can’t wait to go back, I had a yummy key-lime last time I was in, because I couldn’t make up my mind, but next time I’m going with a classic cherry or watermelon
