We want YOUR review of Hong Kong Restaurant in the Roanoke City Market Building
Feb 9, 2012 Restaurant news/reviews
Today’s featured restaurant in our market building review project is Hong Kong Restaurant, another standby from the pre-remodel days of the building. Hong Kong sells Chinese food cooked to order and also offers a lunch buffet.
Please share with all of us what you thought when you dined at Hong Kong by leaving a comment on this blog entry.
You should aim to respond to specific questions about your experiences at the restaurant. For example, what have you tried, and how did you like it? How would you rate the pricing for what you got? How was the service? The atmosphere/vibe? What is your favorite thing about this restaurant? What still needs work? Would you eat there again?
Keep it short. Try not to write more than 300 words.
If you have not been following this ongoing project, you can click here to read more about it and to read the rules.
We are still accepting reviews of all the previous restaurants we’ve featured on the blog so far. Click the links below to add your review of each restaurant. Next week, we’ll feature Firefly Fare on Tuesday and Euro Bakery on Thursday, and then we’ll begin to wrap up the project. I’d love to see as many opinions as possible, and I’m sure others would agree. Thanks!

What was the name of the place that used to be next to the Greek booth in the market? They had the BEST fried rice.

I am one who was happy to hear that Hong Kong would be returning after the Market Building reopened.
I have always thought that it was a good place to get American-Chinese food at affordable prices in hearty quantities — and it still is.
For about $6, you can get rice, two “entrees” and an egg roll. Can’t beat that!
But one of my favorite dishes there isn’t Chinese; it’s their pho. It comes piping hot in a huge bowl with noodles, vegetables and thin slices of beef. I almost always have leftovers. It’s a great soup to have on a cold, blustery day.

In 2006 or so a friend of mine told me about Hong Kong. It wasn’t the usual lunch special of General’s Chicken or Beef and Broccoli that had him addicted, it was something off menu. Spicy House Lo Mein ($4.75). A small order of the shrimp, beef and chicken packed in magic noodles is larger than most people can eat in one sitting (although I always do) and has kept me coming back all of those years.
When they were out of business during the remodel I tried to find a replacement. Some places didn’t have Spicy House Lo Mein and the ones that did just weren’t the same. I was glad they came back.
I’ve eaten the lunch special several times and while it’s good, it can’t compare to the small white styro box that holds what I consider to be the best lunch in town. I have since recommended this dish to several friends and coworkers and all have rave reviews. Be forewarned that if you say “Small Spicy House Lo Mein” they will make it spicy. The service is always amazing and they generally have the same people behind the counter so if you come back regularly they will remember what you like. Next time you’re in the market, treat yourself to a Small Spicy House Lo Mein and you won’t be disappointed.

It might have been Tokyo. Not sure what it was called but it had some awesome fried rice. They also served sushi. What happened to them? Did they move somewhere?

Corrie, we reported in 2010 that the owners of Tokyo Express had moved to Fredericksburg to open a new restaurant.
But that’s the place you’re thinking of.

Offering the best veggie eggrolls in Roanoke, great pho and killer veggie delight, ask for it spicy.

I couldn’t wait for Hong Kong to reopen in the Market Building. I absolutely love it. The food and service never disappoints. The food is always served fresh and hot and in serving sizes so large I guarantee you won’t leave hungry. Without a doubt they have the best General’s Chicken I’ve had anywhere! I can’t say enough about the staff. I’m always greeted with a smile, asked if I want my usual and if there’s time, a nice conversation about how I’m doing and how my day is going. Eating there has always been a pleasant experience and one I look forward to.

I was so glad when Hong Kong reopened. They have great food, reasonable prices, and a very friendly staff. They have the best egg drop soup I’ve ever eaten.

So glad that Hong Kong decided to reopen in the new Market Building…They have the best “lunch special” as far as price/quantity, their food is consistently good and the service is always fast and very friendly!

My boyfriend and I had dinner at Hong Kong on 2/15/12. Sadly, we were about the only customers in the entire food court. The woman who took our order was wonderfully polite and helpful. We both ordered Combination Plates (entree, fried rice, egg roll). They gladly substituted steamed rice for fried rice with my Moo Goo Gai Pan ($6.50). My bf had General Tso’s chicken ($5.80). The portions were very generous and cooked while we waited. The ingredients were super fresh — fresh, not canned mushrooms, for example. The egg rolls were vegetarian, crisp and not greasy. Hong Kong also offers Thai and Vietnamese dishes. I can’t wait to try the Evil Jungle Chicken.
