We want YOUR review of New York Subs in the Roanoke City Market Building

We continue to invite readers to write and submit mini-reviews of the new restaurants inside the Roanoke City Market Building in downtown Roanoke. The building has been open since September 2011 and the new vendors have settled in.

During the past two weeks, we had featured restaurants on this blog each Tuesday and Thursday. Today’s featured restaurant is New York Subs, a sandwich shop that operated in the market building for years before it was closed for renovation, and one of the few vendors who returned.

Please check out New York Subs and write your review on this blog entry. For complete rules and more information about this project, please click here.

You should aim to respond to specific questions about your experiences at the restaurant. For example, what have you tried, and how did you like it? How would you rate the pricing for what you got? How was the service? The atmosphere/vibe? What is your favorite thing about this restaurant? What still needs work? Would you eat there again?

Keep it short. Try not to write more than 300 words.

We are also still accepting reviews of the following restaurants, so if you’re looking for a new dining experience, have lunch or dinner at one of these places and then submit your review! In the next several days, we’ll be asking for reviews of Hong Kong Restaurant, Firefly Fare and European Bakery, so if you might want to get ahead on your homework.

    Review of New York Subs:

I love New York Subs. I have tried the Philly Cheesesteak sub, Chicken Cheese, Hot Ham & Cheese, vegetarian, all of the salads, seasoned fries and the made from scratch pecan pie. Actually I love all the subs, but my favorite is the Chicken Cheese sub (complete with mushrooms, onions and melted cheese) with seasoned fries. My mouth is watering already!

It’s no wonder that New York Subs won “best subs in Roanoke” 2 years in a row in the City Magazine. The pricing is fair and the service is excellent. Your order is ready in a matter of minutes! I have eaten there a number of times and I’ll definitely go back at every opportunity. Good job – Byron and Jackie!

I have eaten at N Y Subs several times and I usually get the Philly Cheese Steak sub with mushrooms, onions and cheese. Its really great. Make sure you pick up a couple napkins and a fork ’cause it’s loaded and may tend to drip off the bun. Bread is very good also.
Don’t forget the delicious pecan pie if there’s any still left or take a piece or whole pie home.
I feel that prices are very reasonable.

New York Subs has the most amazing subs around. The veggie and the ham and cheese are my favorites! And the seasoned fries are quite yummy, too!

I was thinking about eating there the other day, but I didn’t see any kind of menu or prices. Did I miss it? I’d love to try them out, but I’m very leery of ordering something without knowing the prices up front.

What has this evolved into – ‘The Burgs’, where user content is all that’s offered? User response is nice, but it sure seems like this site is being ‘mailed in’ with little involvement. No wonder website clicks are down so drastically. Where’s the effort from the RT staff? There are a dozen websites that allow users to rate Roanoke dining places for themselves. It would be nice to see some input from a professional. I guess the limited budget doesn’t allow that…

No, Crooked Road. We have paid restaurant reviewers and we publish a restaurant review every week. We just genuinely thought readers would enjoy getting in on the action this time, particularly since it is a food court atmosphere instead of a stand-alone restaurant.

Happy Hopa, they usually have menus on the counter. I don’t know why they don’t have a menu board up.

I don’t feel I need a PROFESSIONAL to tell me what’s good. Maybe ‘crooked road’ does but I know what I like. Also this way you can get a diversity of opinions.

I personally think it is great to get reviews from customers and I have enjoyed reading each and every one of them! Thanks Lindsey!!

Ditto what Sandy said! Based on the readers’ reviews, I decided to try Habana Cafe yesterday, and really liked what I had. The beans and rice were delicious, although I like mine a little spicier, but I know they have to appeal to broad tastes. I like the fried plantains, too.

And I want to say this – I know there have been a lot of criticisms of the new Market building design and layout, but I love it. It’s open, bright, clean and easy to get through. I hated the old layout, where people ordering food were bumping into people eating their food at the tables set in the aisle where the vendors are.

    Thanks, Lori.
Does Habana Cafe have hot sauce sitting out for customers to use? I hadn’t noticed but that would be a good idea.

    Thanks so much Debbie! =)

On my recent visit to Habana Cafe there were several bottles of hot sauce on the counter inside the Market building, but none on the tables inside the restaurant side. I guess you could have asked for it from the server.

I’m so glad New York Subs reopened in the market building. Great food, very friendly staff. My top choice is the Caribbean, but all the subs are great.

My son-in-law recently visited from Boston and asked whether New York Subs returned to the market building. He was so excited. He loves it so much he ate there twice during the weekend they were in town.
