Do you have what it takes to make award-winning beer?
If so, then you need to enter the 2012 Homebrewer Competition!
The Roanoke Jaycees and Star City Brewer’s Guild are sponsoring the Homebrew Competition in conjunction with the 2nd Annual Big Lick Beertopia. The winners will be announced during the Beertopia, which takes place on June 9, 2012 at LewisGale Field (where the Salem Red Sox play).
The exciting part: The beer entry named Best in Show will be brewed locally at the Roanoke Railhouse Brewery!
Beers must be homebrewed. No meads or ciders. Entrants must be 21 or older, and the beer must be entered in the name of the actual brewer. There are four categories: light, amber, dark and specialty.
For more information, and to download the official entry form, go to www.biglickbeertopia.com.
Just to get a sense as to how popular home brewing is among my blog readers, who among you has made beer before? What is it about the hobby that you enjoy?

I have what it takes to drink award winning beer but I’ll leave the brewing to someone else!
I love making my own beer!
Being a crafter in general I enjoy the creating a finished project. But what’s really great is being able to share my beer with my friends and family!
And I am planning on entering the competition!
Good luck, Nikki!
Right on, Nikki! I’m with OG… although I WISH I had the skills to brew at home. As of this weekend I’m experimenting with a batch of dandelion wine. Maybe that’s a start?
Making beer is fun and can be very educational if you want to try understand all the chemistry invovled. I’ve learned to appreciate the subtle differences between beer styles and have even honed in on my own preferences. Friends love to drink it and their is a certain level of satisfaction for just doing it yourself. The price is also nice for $30-60 kit I can brew 55 outstanding beers that would probably cost me twice as much in the store for the same quality.
I’m not going to enter the competition…not my thing. I just brew from prepackaged kits I pick up at the Blue Ridge Hydroponic & Homebrew.
That’s a start. Brewing isn’t difficult, it’s simple really and you can start with as something as comparable to microwave mac n cheese. Blue Ridge Hyrdoponics on Williamson has everything from the extract beers to the all grains. Cheers!
Thanks Lindsey and Beet Queen!
I have brewed before, last batch was a Scotish Ale. Really enjoy the process and the results. Won’t be in the competition, but might attend the event.
