Killer lunch specials at Esquisito Pizza and Subs

Correction: This post originally stated that Esquisito is at the corner of Shenandoah Ave. and Peters Creek Road. Wrong! The correct address is in the next paragraph.

My husband checked out a little pizza and sub shop yesterday called Esquisito Pizza & Subs. It’s located in the shopping center at Cove and Peters Creek Road, near Food Lion.

Howard and his co-worker were attracted by the Wednesday special, any cold or hot sub for $4. The subs were served with chips. Howard got the Italian submarine and his buddy got the turkey and cheese sub. They reported that the subs were very good – at least 8 inches long and filled with good quality meats. Howard said the meats on his Italian were thick-cut, and it was topped with veggies and dressing.

That seemed like an outrageously affordable sub special to me. I called Esquisito and they said they run that sub special on Mondays and Wednesdays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the special is lasagna, spaghetti, ziti or manicotti with bread and a side salad for $5.50.

The regular price for subs, which also includes ham and cheese, veggie, tuna or chicken salad, classic club, eggplant Parmigiana, meatball, cheese steak, and more, is $5 to $5.50. Pizzas run from $5 for a small cheese to $17.50 for a Sicilian with everything. They also have several other pasta dishes, calzones, stromboli, salads and burgers.

I’m interested in trying the pizza because we’re always on the lookout for a good, independently run pizza place. The one thing I can say is that the folks at Esquisito need to work on their telephone skills. When I called to ask some questions, someone hung up on me prematurely the first time and it went to an answering machine the next.

If you have had any experience with Esquisito, please tell the rest of us about it.

You must try the pizza at Esquito’s – it is delicious. As a former NY’er, I’m always in search of great pizza and have found Esquito’s to consistently serve the BEST in the Valley.

We’ll give this a try. I’m always on the look out for good pizza and other italian dishes.

Speaking of phone skills, try to call a take out order in to the new Franks on Williamson. I was put on hold for 15 minutes the last time I called and then they realized I was on hold and hung up on me. I called back and they tried to put me on hold again. I told them I was just calling back to let them know I was going somewhere else. They lost my business permanently.

Hey OG, I hear you! Haven’t been (and won’t) go to that Frank’s, but our experience at the one in Salem sent me packing from ALL Frank’s permanently! Went there for spaghetti (my wife was in the mood for it) The dish came out and it was AWFUL!!! Uneatable! We sent it back and the manager gave the server a hard time, and kept glaring over at us. They did replace it but what she had wasn’t much better. Fool me once…. I realize that some of the Frank’s restaurants are owned by different “Frank”s” but no matter.

Me again. My son and I went to Esquisito today for lunch. From West Salem. Regretfully, I can’t tell you how the food is. Contrary to the poster shown above on this blog posting, they are closed on Sunday. Two computer printouts stated this. The look of the place kind of put us off as there is a large sign in the window w/ their pricing on cell phone covers, chargers, and the like. Looked tacky to us! The good news is that when we left there we drove to Jalisco Tacos Mexican Grill on Hershberger Rd. It was our first time there and we loved it! Very good, authentic food for great prices! Two enchiladas, a soft taco, refried beans, $7.99! Flan, $2.50…and it was good! We’ll be back, fish tacos next time!

Don’t know if I’ll try them again or not – it clearly states on the flyer here that they are open Sundays from 1:00 – 9:00 p.m.

    NOT!!!!

We tried to eat there today and the sign on the door says: Closed Sundays!

Just checked and even their website says 1-9 on Sundays!

Forgot to say that on Sunday we went to the Jerusalem on Williamson near Hershberger and had very good food!

Sorry to hear it was closed on Sunday. I hope they get their stuff together.
Dennis, I’m glad you liked Jalisco Tacos. We tried it once but need to go back for a better idea of how good it is.

I’ll have to give a nod to Jalisco Tacos on Hershberger. . . .VERY GOOD!! Decor is plain jane and the menu simple & very limited. . . BUT the Carnita soft tacos are off the wall!!!

I frequently get a calzone to go from here. Very good! I love their cheese and they put loads of ingredients in it. I do agree, the environment is less than desirable and tacky which is why I get my order to go. I too have had difficulty with them on the phone understanding me so I just show up and order. It’s usually very quick.

I just got back from picking up lunch. $5.50 for a metal take out tin full of baked spaghetti and meatballs, a salad (just iceberg lettuce, a couple of sliced carrots and 2 slices of tomato,) and six little garlic bread knots. Very good deal. The sauce was good, not great, but the meatballs, and there were about 10 medium sized ones, were very tasty. So far I’m 2 for 2 there at lunch. Oh yeah, and it only took about 10 minutes for them to make it. That’s pretty quick. I’m gonna try the steak sub next.
