Mediterranean Kabob opening soon

Photo by Lindsey Nair l The Roanoke Times

Roanoke businessman Muhsen Al-Sahlan is planning to open a kabob stand inside his Northwest Roanoke market within the next week or so.

Sahlan owns the Mediterranean Goods Market at 3324 Williamson Road. His halal food store has been open for several years and offers a wide variety of Mediterranean groceries. If you are a food lover, you will enjoy wandering around his store.

Sahlan, a native of Iraq, wanted to bring the cuisine of the Middle East, including dishes popular in Iraq, Turkey, Syria and neighboring countries, to the Roanoke area. He has put a kitchen in his store and will offer items such as kabobs, pita bread, falafel, shawarma and hummus.

If you go looking for Mediterranean Kabob, you may have trouble finding it the first time. The sign shown in this picture is the one to look for as you are traveling down Williamson Road away from downtown and toward Hollins. When you pass the intersection of Williamson and 10th Street, be on the lookout for this sign on the left.

The market and kabob stand are in a building that sits perpendicular to Williamson Road. It has a good-sized parking lot, so don’t worry about finding parking. Incidentally, this is also a great place to park if you’re going to Four Flavors Jamaican restaurant around the corner.

If you try Mediterranean Kabob, I’d like to hear what you think. I’ll post more details when I hear that they have officially opened.

Any word on Hummus House reopening downtown?

I will have to try this.

Some people shy away from the food in places like this but since the food in the store is halal it will probably be safer than most food.

Thanks, Lindsey, that’s awesome news! I’ll look forward to hearing when that is open. My son and I stopped in at the store one day not too long ago, it was really nice! Some very interesting food items in there indeed! Much of which I would need to learn how to prepare/use it! There were a couple of kinds hot salsas in there that, well… I was always taught that when you’re afraid, say you’re afraid! Salsa w/ “ghost peppers” in them made me afraid! I would highly recommend checking out that store, though, it’s very cool. And we’ll def go back for the prepared food when it’s ready!

Maria, I was going to say something along those lines. I love kebabs, and it’s nice to know where the meat is coming from. I love the diversity of food offerings opening up in the valley.
