Wasena City Tap Room still moving toward completion

We drove past The River House in Wasena this weekend to check on the status of development for the apartments, restaurant and climbing gym. The parking lots next to the building were very full on Sunday afternoon, which was a good sign that the leasing is going well.

Leasing agent Michelle Rose confirmed today that 72 of the 128 apartments are now occupied and more tenants are scheduled to move in soon.Rose said only 15 units remain available — a combination of one-bedroom and two-bedroom units — so if you are interested in living in this new development right next to the Roanoke River and the greenway, you may want to hop on it!

As previously reported, Doug and Evie Robison, the owners of Wildflour Market & Bakery on 4th Street in Old Southwest, will be the owners of a new 2,600-square-foot restaurant and bar located in The River House. The Wasena City Tap Room and Grill is slated to open in mid- to late October.

The Robisons have already said the restaurant will have craft beers on tap and a wood-fired oven that’ll be used to cook some of the dishes. But they are going for a full ABC license so they’ll also sell cocktails and wine. Menu offerings will include tacos, burritos, burgers, sandwiches, salads, pizza, hot dogs and soup. Recently, the Robisons have been testing potential tap room dishes on their customers at Wildflour, which I think is an excellent idea.

If you follow the Wasena City Tap Room on Facebook, you will have noticed that they have tested out several different tacos, including a carne asada taco with lettuce, tomato and pickled onions. Just this past Saturday, they featured a pork green chili with rice. “It went really well, they were all received really well,” Doug said. “We want a signature soup and I think that pork green chili is going to be it.”

Check out that Facebook page to see if they plan to test any other potential tap room fare. They’ve also been taking suggestions on Facebook for the beer varieties they will have on draft, although they also said the beers will change periodically. The Robisons are accepting applications for the tap room at Wildflour at 1212 4th Street SW, Roanoke. Oh, and Rose said that climbing gym is set to open in October or November.

Are you excited to check out the Wasena City Tap Room and Grill?

So excited to bike to this restaurant from Rivers Edge. It looks great!

Yes I am! I’m hoping they will have a good selection of GOOD craft beers! More than just one or two, which is all that many bars in this area have. I don’t do Facebook so can’t make suggestions there. I would suggest they try a fish taco and I could suggest a LOT of types of beers. Several of my favorite breweries are Devil’s Backbone, Stone, Dogfish Head, Flying Dog, and Lagunitas. Most any beer from those will do nicely, thank you!

Good eye, Roa10. Yep, looks like they filed the building permit with Roanoke city yesterday or today. I put in a call to see if they can tell us when they hope to break ground and what the guesstimated opening date might be. Thanks.

Hey Lindsey, any idea when the Weiner Stand will reopen?

  7. Lindsey Nair | August 21, 2012 at 4:15 pm

Just a couple of weeks ago, the Roanoke Weiner Stand was still slated to reopen around the beginning of September, which is about 2 weeks away. I’ll call for an update soon.

Wow, a Cook Out goes up a block away from the Steak N ‘Shake site that’s been idle for over a year. Sure gives them a black eye.

We waited for 1-1/2 hours on Friday night. We never were seated and when we questioned the wait, management and the staff were dismissive. After noting several others leaving for the same reason, we left and enjoyed a WONDERFUL meal (and service) at 1906 Ale House. We don’t expect the Tap Room to be running next November. And, we were SO looking forward to going there!! :(
