Cook-Out moving forward in Roanoke AND Rocky Mount

The Roanoke Times l File photo

Blog reader AJ noted earlier this week that Cook-Out Restaurant had apparently started the construction process for a new restaurant on Hershberger Road. He is correct – ground has been broken in the 1400 block and I will keep you all updated on the progress.

But here’s some news I have not yet reported: Cook-Out is also putting a restaurant in Rocky Mount. Construction has begun on Old Franklin Turnpike between Sheetz and BB&T. Assistant town manager Matt Hankins told me this morning that all of the permits have been obtained and construction is underway on what locals refer to as “The 40 East Corridor.” He believes the company is aiming to open that location by the end of the year. The Franklin News Post first published this news today, I believe.

That’s further evidence of what we pretty much knew already – that Cook-Out is in the midst of a significant expansion into the territory of Southwest Virginia. They have already opened locations in Blacksburg and Fairlawn within the past year or so.

Really excited about Cook Out coming to the Roanoke Valley. It’s also a very smart move for them to build a location in Rocky Mount – something that will bring a little fast food competition to McDonald’s.

Oh, boy, more burgers. Just what the Noke needs. Let’s see, do I go to Burger King, McD’s, Wendy’s, Five Guys, Texas Tavern, Red Robin, or Cook Out, or what was that other one on Hershberger that has been in the process for the last 2 years? Getting kind of like Chinese…one on every corner. Reminds me of Texas, how many BBQ and Mexican places can one-horse towns have?

I’ve heard good things about Cook Out and will try them when they open.
Another burger joint yes but sounds like the food is good.
Isn’t it something how their announcement of coming to the area was more recent than this Steak n’ Shake (that we will most likely never see) and yet construction has started at not one but two locations. Sounds like at least this company has their ducks in a row.

Actually, the horses in this one-horse town prefer chili:

Ate at Cook Out a lot in NC. Great food that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Can’t wait!

That’s great news – Cook-Out is an awesome restaurant – great food at great prices. Their milkshakes are the best.

Kathy….if you think all Cookout does is burgers you are totally wrong….In my humble opinion they have not only the widest variety of foods for a fast food menu but also the tastiest…..I’ll take a couple .99 BLT’s and a hugh sweet tea please :P

Eh, Cook-Out is ok, but nothing special. We ate at the one in Fairlawn a couple of times. The milkshakes are good, though. Just don’t plan to actually drink them through a straw…they’re like softened ice cream.

1400 block on hershberger doesn’t tell me a whole lot.
    Any landmarks nearby?

Sorry VT fan, I should just start referring to the Cook- Out site as being in front of K-Mart near Crossroads Mall in Roanoke.

They milkshakes are great at Cook Out, also the Cajun Wraps.. its breaded, fried chicken in a wrap with spices, hot sauce lettuce and cheese… very good together!

The food is good. My problem with it is you feel so rushed. You don’t have time to look at the extensive menu and make up your mind quick enough without making the people behind you mad. This has made my dining experience not so pleasurable.

Blackburger, Their menu is on-line. Check it out at your leisure before you go.

So excited about Cook-Out coming to Roanoke and Rocky Mount (I heard one in Danville too). Now, I won’t have to drive to NC or Lynchburg to get my fix. Great food, menu and prices.
So glad this is going to be a “sit-down”. The ones I have been to in NC are drive thru only.
If you’re reading this Cook-Out, and you’re in the expanding phase….Please come to Martinsville too!!

” the Cook- Out site as being in front of K-Mart near Crossroads Mall in Roanoke.” wasn’t Steak N Shake going to build where the old Western Sizzlin was next to McDonalds? That’s only a couple of hundred yards away, any comment from them?

  17. Lindsey Nair | October 2, 2012 at 10:56 am

Yes, both Cook-Out and Steak ‘n’ Shake are putting locations on Hershberger Road in the general vicinity of Crossroads Mall/K-mart.
They will not be far from one another. Neither will they be far from McDonald’s or Taco Bell or Wendy’s.
I see fast-food restaurants grouped together all the time, often right off interstate exits.

glad to see cook out coming, the food is great and the prices are low for the quality of food. It appears that steak and shake will not ever open. wish they would put a shake shack in there instead. Also, I drove by the wing boss on orange ave. not much process as it appears they may not open either.

Sorry for the double post. Didn’t think my earlier comment posted.

The one on Hershberger is starting to take shape, structural steel is up. Looks to be a drive-thru only model.

  22. Jen | November 18, 2012 at 11:03 am

The Cookout of Hershberger is the first of three in Roanoke according to its manager to be.

@Frank – no there will be room to dine in – they aren’t that big to begin with.
