Pony up at the Texas Tavern!
I don’t know about you guys, but I could use a laugh. And I sure did laugh when my colleague, Dwayne Yancey, showed me this photo he took outside the Texas Tavern in downtown Roanoke about midnight on Friday.
Apparently, someone rode their horse downtown for the evening and stopped at the TT for a bite to eat. As long as the TT has been open, maybe this isn’t the first time someone tied up a horse out front. I’ve heard a few other co-workers say they think they’ve seen this horse downtown before.
I hate to steal Dan Casey’s “caption this” contest idea, but this picture sure does provide a lot of opportunity for goofy jokes. So whoever leaves the funniest comment (in my opinion) on this blog entry wins a copy of “Big Ranch, Big City Cookbook” by Louis Lambert.
I apologize in advance to my friends at the Texas Tavern, which is sure to be the butt of some of these jokes. Paybacks to me will probably come in the form of snarky comments about The Roanoke Times, since this horse is tied up right next to one of our newspaper boxes.

“…and the horse you rode in on, bowl with.”
“Hurry up Wilbur!!! I gotta go”
Or
I’m surprised Roanoke City cops did not write him a parking ticket. The horse is not parallel parked.
“A horse is a horse, of course, of course,
And this won’t talk ’til his voice is hoarse.”
I’d hesitate before leaving a horse alone too long in front of TT.
Brings new meaning to the term “Cheesy Western”!
When the rider first arrived, there was a limo parked outside the Texas Tavern — so you had the juxtaposition of a very fancy ride and, well, another sort of fancy ride, I suppose. The horse did draw a crowd. The Tavern was packed; so was Cuba Pete’s — and there were lots of people milling around on the street. Quite a few of those were coming up to take a picture of the horse. I have another shot from a different angle in which I took a photo of the limo driver taking a photo of the horse.
“Is it a cheeseburger or horseburger? We aren’t in Mexico are we?”
I believe he needs a better job. Too bad there are no more Roanoke Times left in the newspaper box.
“Who do ya have to buck to get a Cheesy Western around here?”
Haha! I’ll wait until next week to see if anybody decides to be witty this weekend. Thanks for having fun with me, guys.
I wonder if this is the same horse that a guy tried to “park” outside Martin’s a few years back? I think he did end up dealing with the cops that time…
Am I at the right place? This IS the Texas Tavern??
Maybe the horse was the designated driver?
Now I know why my Sunday paper is late.

The winner of the cookbook is Jeff, although all of the responses made me smile. Thanks for playing, everyone.
