Thai Continental adds authentic breakfast items
Looking for something different for breakfast one morning? I guarantee you won’t find anything in Roanoke like the new breakfast offerings at Thai Continental Cuisine in downtown Roanoke. Owner Bond Songkhla recently added the breakfast menu, which is available Monday through Saturday from 6 to 10 a.m.
The menu features an American side and a Thai side. On the American side, you’ll find omelets, sandwiches, pancakes, french toast and breakfast platters made up of customary items such as eggs, bacon, sausage and hash browns. Prices there range from $2.50 for one pancake to $7 for the griddle cake combo or the French toast platter with eggs and meat.
But it is the Thai side that will fascinate the adventurous eaters among us. Here’s what it includes:
* Johk – Porridge served with an egg cracked in the middle, minced pork, fresh ginger, fried garlic, crispy noodles and scallions ($5). Add a savory Chinese donut called a pathongo for an extra $1.50.
* Khao tom – Rice soup topped with fresh ginger, scallions, fried garlic and chicken or pork ($5.) Seafood version is $7.
* American fried rice – Jasmine rice stir-fried with raisins, pineapple, cashews, peas and tomato sauce. Topped with a fried egg and served with a whole chicken leg, cucumber slices, two pieces of bacon and two pieces of sausage ($8).
* Chicken fried rice ($5)
* Shrimp fried rice ($7)
* Wonton soup ($5)
* Tofu soup ($4)
* Tao huay – Thai sweet almond-flavored gelatin served in a light ginger syrup ($3).
* Pathongo – Fried Chinese doughnuts served with either sweetened condensed milk sauce or pandan custard sauce ($3).
Beverages available at breakfast include coffee, tea, coconut juice, hot Thai tea or coffee, milk and lemonade.
Thai Continental Cuisine is located at 106 Market Street SE, and the phone number is 342-8111. If you try the breakfast, please let us know how you liked it.

I have taken advantage of the delivery option a couple of times now and I can tell you that the food is great and the people are even nicer. It is our favorite restaurant downtown and it just got even better
It is interesting just how central soups are for breakfast offerings in Asia. I’ve noticed on some of those food shows where they travel and eat ‘odd’ foods. Lots of Asian countries, they eat soup like we eat cereal.
It sort of makes sense, though. It would certainly be a lighter fare than eggs, bacon, etc. and it includes healthy options.
The Thai breakfast is fantastic. I have sampled the johk,khao tom, the chinese and american donuts, and the tao huay. One of the best breakfasts I have had in Roanoke. If you enjoy ethnic cuisine and want something interesting for breakfast, especially as the cold weather sets in, I can not recommend this highly enough.
Great food, and very friendly staff.
It looks fantastic. Can’t wait to try it!
Lindsey, sorry to change the subject, but are large eggs smaller than they once were? Seems like it to me. I did a search and a dozen large eggs must weigh a min of 24 ozs, that was in 2/2011. Wonder if it has changed? Can you find out?
Picked up dinner-to-go there last night and learned about the breakfast menu, I don’t work downtown but will check it out on a Saturday for sure (esp. now that Tudor’s is no more).
Man I wish we had something this near where I work.
Sorry to change the subject, but what’s the latest on Big Lick BBQ? They still look closed, but are painting and moving stuff like crazy.
I noticed some work going on at the BBQ place by towers. Any word on whats going on?
I heard a rumor that a Cajun place is going in @ the former Big Lick BBQ spot.
I bought breakfast there this morning. I love, love, love the johk and the doughnuts
