Cookbook Countdown Day 1: Tyler Florence “Fresh”

Today’s cookbook giveaway features “Tyler Florence: Fresh.” This is a 240-page hardback cookbook from the bestselling author, chef and TV star. It is dedicated to the belief that fresh, unprocessed foods are the healthiest foods you and your family can eat.

In this cookbook, educational essays about “hero ingredients” such as beets, anchovies, clams and quail eggs are interposed with interesting recipes for dishes such as Grilled Artichokes with Anchovy Mayo and Cucumber-Lemon Salsa; Butternut Squash Tortellini with Lentils, Yogurt and Sumac; and Scallops with Melon, Chile and Mint. It also describes “hero techniques” such as making confit vegetables and quickly pickling foods.

To enter to win this book, leave a comment on this blog entry. I will also throw in a “For Dummies” grilling mitt. I’ll announce the winner on New Year’s Eve.

What an interesting description of the cook book. My family is trying to eat ‘healthier’ so I would put this cook book to good use. Also I wouldn’t know what to do with quail eggs but I’ll admit I sure am willing to try them!

Lindsey, I made the Ukrops Chocolate Chess Pie recipe that you shared with us a while back and just wanted to let you know that everyone loved it! I have two more in the oven as I type this (to carry to my mother-in-law’s tomorrow). It’s incredibly simple to whip up and bake. Thank you so much for sharing that fabulous recipe with your readers! Hope you and your loved ones have a joyous holiday season!

This is not on the cookbook topic, but I thought I’d share this rant as a warning: So we were at Food Lion the other night, gathering supplies for a recipe that required two cups of milk. Cheapskate that I am, I grabbed from the dairy case what I thought was a pint of the store brand. The bottle seemed a bit skinny, though, so I looked at the fluid ounces. Twelve, not 16! We all know that what we used to take for granted as a half gallon of ice cream isn’t a half gallon anymore, but you don’t usually have to measure ice cream. Shame on you, Food Lion!

Always up to incorporating new techniques in our meals. Our daughter wanted us to try duck confit, so the vegetables confit sounds intriguing. Keeping fingers crossed!
