At last year’s Salem Fair, there were 600 exhibitors and almost 4,000 items entered in the Blue Ribbon Exhibits. That’s according to Melissa de Pineda, coordinator of this huge portion of the popular annual event at the Salem Civic Center.
If you have never entered an exhibit in the fair before, this could be your year! At this year’s fair, which runs July 3 through 14, there are categories galore for bakers and cooks. Those include canned fruits and vegetables, breads, cookies, cake, candy, pies, jelly, jams, and pickles. In addition, there are tons of categories for the talented gardener in your family. He or she can show off the prize beans, onions, potatoes, tomatoes and other veggies for a chance to win bragging rights.
Special contests this year include the Run for the Fair Food Competition (dishes created using fair food), the Amateur and Professional Cake Decorating Contest, the Wilton Christmas in July Cupcake Contest, the King Arthur Flour Sweet and Savory Bar Contest, and the Platinum Red Star Yeast Doughnut Contest.
Non-food-related categories are numerous, as well, so if you are into flower arranging, needle arts, doll making, woodworking, ceramics, leather working or some other kind of craft, you ought to check the categories to see if you can enter one of your favorite creations.
Because there are so many categories and everyone needs to follow the rules so the contests run smoothly, it is best to read the contest rules, classes and other information yourself. You can find all of that under the “Exhibitor Info” tab on the Salem Fair website here.
The one very important piece of information you need to know is that registration for all of the Blue Ribbon Exhibits is July 1 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the main lobby of the Salem Civic Center. You can download an entry form at the link provided in the previous paragraph. If you or someone you know cannot access that information via computer, entry forms can be picked up at the civic center during operating hours.
