Blueberry season is just around the corner in Virginia, with pick-your-own farms gearing up to open in mid- to late June or early July.
This year brings a new farm into the mix. Misty Meadows Farm in Penhook is set to open on June 15, according to owners John and Peggy Calamo. The Calamos used to work as a paid firefighter and bookkeeper, respectively, in Connecticut. But about eight years ago, they made a life change and moved to Virginia to start this farm.
Between preparing soil, planting and waiting for the bushes to be large enough, it has taken them that long to be ready to welcome customers onto the farm. They have about three acres and 1,800 plants.
Misty Meadows Farm will be open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day except Sunday, when it will be closed. Berries are $3 per pound. No pesticides are used. The address is 2153 Friendly Drive, Penhook. For more information, call 434-927-4251.
