My special guy is celebrating an important birthday soon, so I’m planning a little shindig for him.
Initially, I thought it would be a cookout because that’s just what we do in the summer, isn’t it? When we have parties, we fire up the grill and char some food. But then I realized I’m not the grill master in the family and if it were my birthday, I wouldn’t want to stand over a hot grill on a sweltering summer day.
The answer: BBQ! So I went to Sam’s Club yesterday and bought two giant pork tenderloins, which I plan to slow cook for the festivities. I have found that rubbing a loin and wrapping it in plastic wrap overnight before browning and putting in the slow cooker results in a nice ‘que. This got me wondering if I wanted to use up my entire bottle of Penzey’s BBQ 3000, make a rub from scratch or buy some other rub to try this time.
I love Penzey’s BBQ 3000 and I’ve used it on a number of occasions and on various different kinds of protein. But I know there are 101 rub recipes in this world and some are really quite simple (for this occasion, I really don’t want a 17-ingredient rub recipe). I also know there are plenty of BBQ rubs for sale in stores, some of which are likely very good.
Do you make your own rub or do you buy a pre-made product? What do you think I should do for hubby’s birthday BBQ?
