I have prepared a selection of food news tidbits this morning for your reading pleasure. Check back later in the day to see if you won this week’s cookbook giveaway. The deadline to enter was 5 p.m. yesterday.
* Do you want to win a dozen free cupcakes from Bubblecake? The person who chooses the winning name for the company’s new mobile cupcake van will score those goodies. The van is currently a blank slate – it’s painted white with no signage at all. Suggestions on their Facebook page so far include “Sugar Rush,” “Bubble on the Double,” “The Bubble Buggy” and “Cupcake Express.”

* Congrats to the Inn on Campbell, a bed and breakfast located in downtown Roanoke. It has been selected as one of the top 10 percent in the world’s best establishments by TripAdvisor.com. According to a press release from Downtown Roanoke, Inc., the B&B has received “no less than 65 ‘five star reviews’” on the travel website and has been awarded the Certificate of Excellence for 2013.
The Inn on Campbell just added a fourth suite featuring 15-foot ceilings, a crystal chandelier, and large windows overlooking Kirk Avenue, as well as Scandia Down bedding and an en suite bath.
* Two local restaurants made Wine Spectator magazine’s 2013 Best Restaurant Wine List Awards. They are 202 Market in downtown Roanoke and Preston’s at the Inn at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The complete list will be in the issue that hits newsstands on August 31. You can also search Wine Specator’s restaurant database here.
* You may have read in this past Saturday’s newspaper that the Peaks of Otter Lodge and Restaurant have reopened under new ownership. The menu being served right now was set by the new owners, Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts. But the new executive chef, Eric Martines (formerly of Billy’s in downtown Roanoke) tells me he’s working on his own menu, which will replace the one being used at this time.
