Over the past few years, Our Daily Bread in Blacksburg has been slowly updating its atmosphere. Sleek tables and contrasting red seating replaced mismatched, bulky tables. New artwork appeared. Chandeliers made of wine glasses and bottles were suspended from the ceiling. In April, a new bistro dinner menu debuted to go along with the emerging bistro setting.
I asked some friends to try it with me recently. Greeted promptly on arrival by a waiter in a long black apron, we were offered our choice of tables. A basket of crusty bread appeared, as did a complimentary quartet of tiny caramelized onion tarts. These devoured, we dug into our three appetizers.
Black mussels ($5.95) in a tomato herb sauce were cooked and flavored nicely. A number of mussels hadn’t been properly de-bearded. Calamari steak ($5.95) was tender with a lovely lemony flavor.
