Representatives for the Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation have filed an application for rezoning with Roanoke’s Department of Planning, Building and Development for a piece of land near Crossroads Mall on Hershberger Road.
The application, filed earlier this month by SS Acquisition, LLC, requests that a portion of the parcel currently occupied by Appliance Outlet and K&W Cafeteria at 1609 Hershberger Road NW be rezoned from Commercial Large Scale to Commercial General so a Krispy Kreme store can be built there.
The request proposes that the cafeteria remain but the Appliance Outlet be torn down to make room for the construction of a 50-seat Krispy Kreme store with a drive-through window and a bakery. Since the 1950s-era Krispy Kreme factory and store on Melrose Avenue was shuttered in May following an attic fire, doughnuts have been trucked in to grocery and convenience stores in the Roanoke area from the company’s Winston-Salem headquarters.
