What Virginia drinks
UPDATE: Today (Friday), Matt tried out a different look at alcohol sales in Virginia. Instead of ranking it by dollars, he ranked it by volume. He had to use the 2006 numbers because he didn't have the 2007 numbers by volume yet. But the results are striking: Apparently, Virginians love their cheap vodka! Hit the first link below to see.
Check out Matt Chittum's blog, Datasphere, today for a fascinating look at Virginians' favorite liquors.
Matt took the 2007 figures from the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and broke it down into a nifty bubble graph. The result? It appears that Virginians bought more Jack Daniels last year than any other distilled liquor.
What? You mean Jim Beam didn't come in at No. 1? Even after they recently celebrated their 11 millionth barrel?
I might be responsible for one of those barrels. But I digress.
According to the ABC data, Jim Beam came in second, followed closely by Grey Goose, Seagram's Crown Royal and Absolut.
Check out the graph and let me know what you think.

__NathanI was intrigued by your post, and couldn't for the life of me figure out why the top shelf liquors sold faster. But looking at the graph, it's in dollars, not liters. Take into account the cost differential, and you'll find that Beam sells more volume, just at a lower price. http://www.abc.state.va.us/Pricelist/price.html By my calcs, Jack sells approx. 721,220 liters to Beam's 980,500 liters. How many of those were yours, Lindsey?

Lindsey : →http://blogs.roanoke.com/fridgemagnet/You're right, Nathan. That would also explain why Grey Goose was so high on the list. You can probably buy one gallon of Jim Beam to every three 750 ML bottles of that stuff! So in reality, Virginians actually did buy more Jim Beam and that's because...we're cheap! Nah, I just prefer the taste. No comment on how many were mine... Seth, thanks for the link. I had not seen that before. Let me know how your acquisitions go.

Nona : →http://blogs.roanoke.com/thehappywag/Henry, the Grey Goose number may have been artificially inflated since my mother-in-law made a couple of trips to this area last year.
When she visits, we like to keep her happy and the Grey Goose flowing.
And yes, it is well worth it.
