Loco for peanut butter

pbloco.jpg

Even if I wanted to ignore this dark chocolate peanut butter and banana peanut butter, I couldn't. It's been turning up in some unexpected places.

Of course, I wouldn't voluntarily choose to ignore any kind of peanut butter because it's probably one of my favorite flavors, particularly when incorporated into a delicious peanut butter cookie or peanut butter pie. Mmmmmm.

I just don't understand people who don't like peanut butter -- like my husband. What's the deal?

The P.B. Loco Dark Chocolate Duo and a jar of Sunland Banana Peanut Butter Spread turned up in my mailbox a couple of weeks ago. But after sampling the two and sharing them with some co-workers, I shoved the jars in my desk drawer and temporarily forgot about them.
That's what a busy holiday schedule makes me do.

But then, this weekend, I was wandering through the grocery store looking for queso dip ingredients when I passed a table and a woman offering samples of...you guessed it, chocolate and banana peanut butter.

Both of the flavors she had were by the P.B. Loco brand, and she says they will both be available for purchase at area Kroger stores! Subconsciously, that might have been another reason I didn't mention these peanut butters before-- because I assumed they might be hard to find in these parts.

The chocolate peanut butter is more peanut buttery than chocolatey, but it does have a subtle Reese's flavor and a smooth, creamy consistency. Almost too runny in my opinion, but that might make it easier for baking.

The banana peanut butter by Sunland scored higher for me. Although it is a very thick consistency and hard to spread, the flavor is scrum-diddly-umptious. Elvis would be so impressed. You could spread it on a slice of bread and enjoy without the need for any jelly or sliced bananas or anything.

Of course, I'm dreaming of a banana peanut butter and honey sandwich on toast, because it just sounds like such a treat. I haven't tried P.B. Loco's version of the banana peanut butter, but I would assume it's easier to spread than Sunland's.

As it turns out, it was a good thing I held off on writing about these specialty peanut butters until after I ran across the lady in the grocery store. She gave me recipes for a sinful Banana/Dark Chocolate Stuffed French Toast and Loco Banana Bread, which I will share here.

Let me know how you like this peanut butter if you happen to buy a jar.

Loco Banana Bread

1/2 cup P.B. Loco Jungle Banana Peanut Butter
1/3 cup butter
2/3 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 ripe bananas, mashed
1 3/4 cup flour
1 1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Prep: Cream butter and sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, and beat at a low speed. Mix in the peanut butter.
alternate mixing in banana and dry ingredients. Add nuts, if desired. Pour into a greased and floured loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for 55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Banana/Dark Chocolate Stuffed French Toast

5 Tbsp. P.B. Loco Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter
12 slices banana
2 slices bread
1 egg
1/3 cup milk

Prep: Spread peanut butter onto one side of each slice of breat. Place four rows of three banana slices on the peanut butter of one slice of bread. Whisk egg and milk in a bowl large enough to dip the bread.
Put the two slices of bread together with the peanut butter and banana on the inside. Dip the "sandwich" into the egg mixture and grill until golden brown on each side.

I heard about PB LOCO a couple of years ago and purchased some of there PB! IT was good stuff! There is another place called, Peanut butter and company (http://www.ilovepeanutbutter.com/), which also makes some outstanding flavors of peanut butter! My favorite of theirs was cinnamon raison! Yummmm!!!

I'd be hard pressed to try the banana pb. I'm not a big fan of anything that is banana 'flavored'...unless it is...a banana.
Plus, there is no substitue for a PB&B with a light dusting of brown sugar, accompanied by a cold glass of milk.

Is the banana taste strong? I checked the website, but it doesn't list any ingredient information. =(

Ooooh, Carrie, cinnamon-raisin peanut butter sounds right up my alley. Think of the cookies you could make!
Rich, I don't find the peanut butter flavor to be overly strong in the Sunland brand. The ingredients list roasted valencia peanuts, sugar and "banana compound" as the first three ingredients, with the compound consisting of banana, sucrose, dextrose, fructose and banana extractives. Whatever that is.
I can totally buy your argument that a freshly sliced banana over plain peanut butter is a more authentic taste.

You're in luck! My argument is for sale! And BOY is it cheap today!

As long as it doesn't taste like artifical banana, I'd probably give it a shot.

Mmm...banana compound...

I like the Sunland banana peanut butter, but the raspberry peanut butter is even better.

Jake, I hadn't heard of the raspberry. If you're local, I'd love to know where you have found it.
Thanks!

Jake

I bought it at a food expo in Washington DC. Order it online at http://www.sunlandinc.com. We also bought the chocolate and cinnamon. Both very good. The raspberry was my favorite.
