Breakfast ALL DAY LONG!
I have broken my cardinal rule of blogging by not blogging until almost the end of the day today.
I was kept busy by my continuing efforts to weasel my way into the Paula Deen appearance. I've pretty much given up now, don't worry. I will not become a stalker.
When I finally checked comments again this evening and saw all the wonderful stuff from readers, I was inspired to continue our discussion of breakfast. To some, the most perfect meal of the day.
My speculation that many folks do not like sweets for breakfast was confirmed by a few of you. But even those who do like sugar for breakfast occasionally partake of something.... well...WEIRD instead.
Here's a sampling:
Kathy: More than once, I've made a hot dog-version of the Western from Texas Tavern for breakfast. No joke: hot dog with fried egg, relish, ketchup and mustard on a bun.
Henry: You haven't had a salty breakfast until you have weinie gravy. Yes, you heard me right. Leftover hot dogs fried in a skillet and then gravy is made with them. Pour the whole mess on a biscuit. It is a good thing.
Dennis: How 'bout grilled knockwurst w/ sauerkraut and toasted/buttered rye bread? Yummy! Or black beans and rice w/ LOTS of HOT sauce and a couple of scrambled eggs! Another big ole yummy!! Fried bologna and eggs w/ toast is also delicious.
Debi: My babysitter used to give me hot dogs (no bun) for breakfast. She cut it up into small chunks and put a dollop of mustard on each piece....from the mustard in the yellow barrel!
Okay, I'm sensing a totally tubular theme here. Hot dogs, knockwurst, bologna. Well, sausage comes in tube form, so why not? My husband is big on the non-breakfast breakfast, too. The smell of his nuking lasagna one morning almost sent me over the edge, though.
While many of us seem to enjoy dinner foods for breakfast, I'm guessing a good number also love to eat breakfast for dinner. I'm a lover of such a treat. My mom used to make fried apples with sausage and biscuits for dinner sometimes. I have mentioned that before, so clearly I am nostalgic.
Where can you get a good breakfast in Roanoke after noon? Well, Lil' Chef is one option. And now, so is Thelma's Chicken 'n' Waffles. Of course, there is the venerable Tudor's Biscuit World, which we all seem to agree is the bomb.
I like Famous Anthony's for breakfast, but I've found myself rushing to make it before noon on many a Saturday or Sunday because they stop serving it at about 11:59 a.m.
Where else is the good all-day breakfast served?

JayI like IHOP for an anytime (24-hour) breakfast. I actually don't like their other lunch/dinner selections...I think there's nothing special about it. But there breakfast is simple and tasty.

Amy Hanek : →http://www.houseonthegladehill.blogspot.comBreakfast is my back up meal during a busy week. It takes only minutes to make and my kids will happily consume with no whining. Syrup is, of course, the side dish of the meal.
My Dad used to make us breakfast for dinner whenever he was left stranded alone with the three of us (wimp). I can assure you this only happened SOMETIMES, but still it was a nice treat.
Hmmmm... I think I am headed to IHOP tonight. It IS Friday.

KathyWaffle House! Get a pecan waffle and sausage or bacon; omigosh!! or the scrambled eggs with cheese, grits, bacon and raisin toast; yum!
I like to fix country ham, apples, biscuits and fried eggs sometimes for dinner.
IHOP is good, too.

HenryJoe's Diner in Blacksburg or Denny's in C'burg. We make "breakfast for dinner" at home a few times a month. I have a secret sin nature for corned beef hash but it will kill you faster than anything so I avoid it. But when the family is gone, I break out the liver pudding and eggs for breakfast.
The local Mexican restaurants have breakfast-type fare for lunch. Huevos Rancheros and the like. El Guad's in B'burg has a good selection.
My dad would fry apples and put enough sugar in the skillet so that it would caramelize on the apples. That was good.

DebiAll day breakfast? Try IHOP or Sonic.

NonaPanera Bread has a great little egg souffle, decent bagels, and for those who like sweet stuff in the morning they have good muffins and pastries. They have good coffee, too. My favorite morning item is coffee; it's more of an addiction really. So anywhere I can get full-flavored coffee that tastes fresh is a good breakfast spot for me.

MasonI believe the Pancake House on Apperson serves breakfast all day. It's pretty fantastic, though I don't get to eat there as much as I'd like.
[August 24, 2007 2:45 PM]
DebiReally Mason? I haven't been there for years, even though I live nearby, since the last time I was there the place was absolutely filthy and the food/service was terrible. Maybe it has improved?

MasonMaybe I've just got low standards. I love a greasy spoon. But I still like it.

__NathanI've had several great breakfasts at Mojo Cafe on Brambleton. Very good, filling, and reasonably priced. And of course, great coffee.

MarionEasy at-home meal when time is short: Drain one can corn & mix it into pancake mix. Yummy! My kids loved it & now hubby enjoys it (with gluten-free pancake mix). Add butter and pour on syrup; the taste is out of this world.
Other than that, IHOP has those nutty whole-grain pancakes that are lovely.

JordanI couldn't help join in the conversation, because I am a breakfast freak.
Roanoke Bagel on 419 makes the best bagels in Roanoke. Hands down. They're the perfect kind that's kind-of crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside.
Zorba (in the market building) doesn't make all-day breakfast, but he does make it up until 11am. And it's surprisingly good...but then again so is everything at Zorba's.

MikeThe Pancake House in Salem. They have breakfast all day. Make sure you go to the one in Salem . There is one on Williamson rd that is in no way related to this one. The one on Williamson I've never eaten at but I heard from more than one that it's bad and dirty. The one in Salem I've been eating at for nearly 3 years. Food is almost always good. They may get a bit mess but that's always during or after a rush. I have seen them full and a line out the door waiting on a Saturday morning.
Little Chef in Roanoke has breakfast all day. Just hope you hit them at their good time. It's a 50/50 shot their.

LindseyThe one time I went to the Pancake House in Salem, the line was so long that we had to leave. That tells me something about a restaurant. I'll have to try it again soon.
I've eaten in the one on Williamson before and the service and food were adequate, but have you ever looked at the ceiling? Makes me wonder how many cigarettes it took to turn it that color.

Tom in MudforkI've never had Zorba's breakfast, but, as you say, everything that Adel cooks is good! Wish I still worked on the market. Let's see, will it be the vegetarian plate, or the gyro plate. the felafel king rules!!

JohnI haven't had the pleasure of Zorba's breakfast; just him laughing at me after I bit into a thumbtack the last time I ate there.
I like Sheila's on Kirk for breakfast. The Pancake House in Salem was always a constant in mine and my friends' diets at Roanoke College.

Lindsey"I haven't had the pleasure of Zorba's breakfast; just him laughing at me after I bit into a thumbtack the last time I ate there."
Uhhh....OK, John, you are going to have to elaborate on this one, buddy.
[October 3, 2007 10:16 PM]
__NathanOk, I'll break down and say it...John, you should have ordered the special - It's $3.99 without tacks.
[October 4, 2007 1:24 AM]
JohnIt's been a few years... but it was one of the few times I ate there.
When I bit into my food a thumbtack got stuck in my gums (not too far in, but far enough in that I had to reach in and pull it out rather than just swatting it with my tongue). When I want back up to the counter and told him about it, he laughed at me and went back to cooking, despite me standing there with nearly-untouched food, a thumbtack, and a blood-dotted napkin.

MikeCan't believe I forgot about this place. Miss Kitty's Cafe in Salem. Great food with that homemade taste. Real tea made the way I like it. Can't ever remember getting something that I was disappointed in. Pancakes that put most places to shame. So big they fill the plate. Only negatives is the place is very small only seats about a dozen at a time and they smoke. Between the cooking and smoking the air can get thick is a way to put it. They are also only open M-F 6 am to 2 pm.
[October 4, 2007 2:47 PM]
Jordan..But don't you know? The thumbtacks are what make Zorba's so tasty!
