Wine Down the Music Trail

winedown.jpg

We don't talk much about wine or music on this blog, but I can't see how anyone who enjoys food as much as my blog readers wouldn't enjoy a little vino and some great tunes to go along with it.

That's why I want to remind you all of a special event next weekend, July 5 and 6, called Wine Down the Music Trail.

Wine Down takes place right off the Blue Ridge Parkway at the FloydFest site, which is located just before you get to Chateau Morissette. Shamefully, I admit that I have never been, but my co-worker, Ralph, says it's the prettiest open ridge, complete with a permanent stage and a lovely view of the mountains.

More than 16 different local wineries will be represented there, so you'll have a chance to taste a slew of samples. There are shuttle buses from Roanoke and Blacksburg this year, too, in case you're worried about drinking and driving.

For our purpose, I wanted to know what kind of food will be available at the festival. Danica Mingee at Across the Way Productions, which puts on the festival, was kind enough to e-mail me a detailed list of vendors, which I will attach below the jump. It made my mouth water!

You're also welcome to bring a picnic of your own; there's no rule that says you have to eat what's offered there. Of course, with offerings like pintos and cornbread, lobster mac 'n' cheese, crabcakes, green curry and fried cheesecake, you might want to bring a picnic AND sample the fare!

For all the details about the festival, head to the Across the Way Web site here.

Food vendors at Wine Down the Music Trail:

The Chocolate Spike: Excite your taste buds with an assortment of specialty chocolates and funnel cakes drizzled with your choice of gourmet sauces.

Meadows of Dan Volunteer Fire Department and Vesta Volunteer Rescue Squad: Homemade BBQ, hot dogs, pintos with cornbread, and homemade desserts, all for a great cause.

The Stick Men: Serving fire-grilled chicken, shrimp, tuna and veggie skewers with seasoned rice, fried corn dogs, and an assortment of desserts, including hand-dipped chocolate bananas, fried candy bars and fried cheesecake.

Sherri’s Fun Foods: Sherri’s crab cakes are consistently compared to the finest seafood restaurants. Using loads of crabmeat and only the best ingredients, Sherri’s can’t be beat!

Outback Kate’s: International and American fare such as paella Espanol, Bankok drunken noodles, lobster mac and cheese, filet medallions, Thai green curry, fried green tomatoes, Thai bubble tea and more!

Nader’s Bistro & Grill: Home-style authentic Mediterranean cuisine. Here you’ll find great flavors and aroma, traditional seasonings, and the freshest ingredients drawn from land and sea.

Family Grill: Supplying festival patrons with authentic Chinese and Thai cuisine. Serving a variety of dishes including fried rice, lo mein, kabobs, pad Thai, egg rolls and more!

BasketCause: Selling the finest and freshest food from local suppliers- bread, cheese, nuts, berries, honey, pepper turkey sticks and sweets, all packed inside a picnic basket that you get to keep. They provide everything you need to relax and enjoy the perfect afternoon picnic.

My family and I went last year to meet my sister. It was our birthday (July 7th - I'm an identical twin). I enjoyed the wine and food. The Gaelic Storm (band playing) were great. I will not be returning this year though. The crooked road I took to get there was too long and waaaaaaay to crooked. I've heard there will be a shuttle from Roanoke and the NRV. When they have one from Franklin Co. I will be there.

The SML wine festival will have to fulfill my need for wining (to go with my kids' need for whining).

Wine Down and Floyd Fest just keep getting better and better ... well organized, clean, great music, and good food and craft vendors. I used to lug a big food cooler to these events but the outdoor cooking smelled so good, I'd end up taking my food home. Now I travel light and enjoy the varied fare. Bon appetite.
