Has it really been 25 years?

Really?

Has it been 25 years since the greatest senior year an athlete has ever compiled in the Virginia High School League.

Is Calvin Talford really 44 years old?

Doesn’t seem that long ago in 1988 when Talford put together a run in four sports at Castlewood High School that has to be nearly unmatched anywhere.

He went out for varsity football for the first time and scored five touchdowns in a playoff game.

In basketball, Talford averaged 30 points per game with 48 dunks and led his team to the Group A quarterfinals. In one game, Talford outscored Chilhowie by himself with 59 points in a 99-56 victory (see the video link below).

He was good enough as a pitcher and outfielder in baseball to be drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in June after he graduated.

While playing baseball, he also competed in track and field. All the 6-foot-3, maybe 6-4 if you’re stretching it, athlete did was set Group A state records in the high jump (7-0), triple jump (49-8 1/2) and long jump (23-11 3/4). Two of those records still stand.

Talford went on to lead East Tennessee State to four NCAA basketball tournament berths including a first-round victory over Arizona in 1992. He won the college basketball  slam dunk contest in Minneapolis after his college career ended.

Talford played briefly in the CBA and extensively overseas. I believe he has returned to the Tri-Cities area in Northeast Tennessee, but someone can help me with that.

Want a glimpse of what it was like to see the amazing Talford at Castlewood in 1988, when he was named Timesland athlete of the year? Yes, the Russell County school was in Timesland then.

Region IV boys tennis final…sportsmanship at its finest

I just returned from Thursday’s Region IV boys singles championship match between Salem’s Michael Drougas and Hidden Valley’s Tim Roehr at River’s Edge.

It was great to see two high-quality high school players battle without all the nonsense from the stands that can sometimes mar the proceedings.

Drougas’ 6-3, 6-3 victory produced solid tennis and good sportsmanship in equal doses. The coaches let the players play and the crowd kept a respectful distance when it came to cheerleading.

I don’t mind coaches and spectators applauding their players’ good shots, but the envelope is pushed far too often. I’ve played and covered tennis for 45 years, and I know when spectators and worse, a coach, is doing something verbal to rattle a kid’s nerves.

So congrats to Michael Drougas and to Tim Roehr for respecting the game, and thanks to all in attendance for respecting the two players.
