Updated VHSL playoff scenario as of late Friday night

Here’s the quick look at the playoff picture in Timesland in Group AAA and Group AA after Friday night’s games as of 12:15 a.m. Saturday.

The big news is Patrick Henry, William Byrd and Bassett have made the playoffs. Blacksburg is out and things don’t look good for Martinsville.

PH got in by beating  William Fleming on Friday, but Woodbridge’s win over previously unbeaten Stonewall Jackson now might relegate PH to the No. 6 seed. If Granby beats Maury today in Norfolk, then PH will drop to No. 6 and play at Colonial Forge in the first round in the Northwest Region Division 6.

William Byrd got in the Region IV Division 4 field  by three-tenths of a point over Harrisonburg even though Byrd lost to Rockbridge County on Friday. The Terriers finished at 20.60 on the VHSL Rating Scale to 20.30 for Harrisonburg. Turner Ashby finished at 20.00. All four Harrisonburg-area Group AA teams failed to qualify. Byrd will play at Lord Botetourt next Friday. Also, Amherst made up ground and edged Heritage by a tenth of a point for the No. 1 spot even though Heritage finished with one more win and beat the Lancers this year. E.C. Glass will play at Jefferson Forest in the other first-round game.

Rockbridge County moved up to No. 2 in Region III Division 3 behind unbeaten Brookville. Robert E. Lee claimed the No. 3 spot with Northside taking No. 4. The first-round pairings will be Fort Defiance at Northside, and Liberty at Robert E. Lee.

Both divisions in Region IV are not finalized.

In Division 4, Salem is No. 1 and Hidden Valley will be No. 2. Christiansburg is the No. 3 seed. The fourth spot will go either to Pulaski County or Magna Vista. Pulaski will get it if Richlands defeats Tazewell on Saturday afternoon. Bassett earned the No. 6 spot with its win over Magna Vista which probably cost the Warriors three spots in the seedings.

In Region IV Division 3, Cave Spring dropped all the way to No. 4 after the smoke cleared Friday. Richlands is No. 1, followed by No. 2 Tunstall. Marion, picking up 10 rider points from its schedule Friday, vaulted past Cave Spring into the No. 3 spot. Abingdon is No. 5 right now, but if Tazewell should stun Richlands, the Bulldogs could move up to No. 5 and drop Abingdon to No. 6. Tazewell appears to have clinched at least the No. 6 spot even with a loss today. Tazewell and Martinsville are tied with 148 points, but Tazewell holds the tiebreaker. That would end the coaching tenure at Martinsville of Bobby Dalton, who announced before the season he would accept an administrative position next year.

Why? Dont the Chatham Cavaliers an Dan River Wildcats Re Join the Piedmont District instead of adding Franklin County etc ?

If they moved, the Dogwood District would have just five teams, meaning the other schools would have to line up six nondistrict football games and 12-14 nondistrict games in other sports. Either that or more shuffling to move other teams into the Dogwood.

Thanks for all your work I have a hard enough time crunching the numbers for region III I can imagine doing how much you do.

Group A is a challenge now with 64 teams. Next year I might need two or three of me with 192 teams statewide. Region III is in stone now. You hate to see rematches of regular-season games like Byrd-Botetourt, Glass-Jefferson Forest,, Pulaski-Magna Vista and Bassett-Christiansburg. There will be less chance of that next year with the new setup. Region IV should be settled in an hour or so.
