Fort Chiswell RB offered walk-on spot by UVa

Fort Chiswell running back Daniel Hamm has been offered a spot as an invited walk-on at Virginia, Pioneers head coach Stephen James said Thursday.

Hamm ran for 1,902 yards and 26 touchdowns on 215 carries this season as Fort Chiswell finished 11-2 and reached the Group A Division 2 quarterfinals. Hamm also was the Pioneers second-leading tackler.

Hamm was named the Mountain Empire District offensive player of the year. A three-sport star, Hamm won the triple jump in the Group A track and field meet in 2011 and was a starting guard on the Pioneers’ basketball team that reached the Division 2 semifinals last winter.

Blacksburg grad named soccer prep All-American

Michael Mecham, the 2012 Timesland boys soccer player of the year, has been chosen as one of 77 players named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America boys All-American team for the season that ended in June.

Mecham scored 22 goals and had four assists as a midfielder last spring as Blacksburg reached the VHSL Group AA semifinals.

Mecham recently completed his freshman season on scholarship as a starter for UNC-Wilmington.

Also, Blacksburg assistant coach Travis Bishop has been named the NSCAA’s Eastern Region assistant coach of the year.

Bishop has served three stints as a Blacksburg asssistant, and was the team’s co-head coach in 2008. Blacksburg has a 254-17-5 overall record during Bishop’s tenure.

More on Rowsey’s 60-point game

In case you missed it Saturday night or Sunday morning, Rockbridge County senior Andrew Rowsey scored 60 points in a 117-87 victory over Stuarts Draft in the consolation game of the Spotswood Invitational in Penn Laird.

Rowsey left the game with 6:53 to play after spraining his ankle. He is expected to play Friday at Amherst County but he will miss at least one practice this week.

The breakdown on Rowsey’s night — which broke his own single-game school record of 47 points — is as follows: 15 points in the first quarter, 21 points in the second quarter, 18 points in the third quarter and six points in the fourth quarter.

The 5-foot-11 senior guard hit 24 of 33 shots from the field and was 5 of 10 from 3-point range.

Rowsey has scored 120 points in three games and has 1,826 for his career. Rockbridge has a minimum of 20 games remaining in 2012-13. If Rowsey plays in just 20 more games he would need to average more than 43 points per game the rest of the way to eclipsed the VHSL career scoring record of 2,687 set by Stacy Ervin of Twin Springs in 1997.

The VHSL/VIA career scoring list is here. See if you can guess who the top five scoring leaders in Timesland are.

The VHSL/VIA single-game scoring list is here. What is the all-time record? Let’s just say that Rowsey didn’t even make it halfway.

Rowsey scores 60 points in Rockbridge win

Rockbridge County High School senior Andrew Rowsey posted one of the highest individual boys basketball scoring totals in Timesland history Saturday night with 60 points in a 117-87 victory over Stuarts Draft in the third-place game in the Spotswood Invitational in Penn Laird.
Rockbridge head coach Darrell Plogger said Rowsey was removed from the game with six minutes to play.
The 5-foot-11 senior guard has scored 121 points in three games this season for the Wildcats (2-1), for an averaged of 40.3 points per game.
