Nation’s top prep recruit in Floyd event Saturday

Andrew Wiggins, a 6-foot-7 forward who is rated the No. 1 high school basketball recruit in the 2013 graduating class, will headline the Chance Harman Classic on Saturday at Floyd County High School.

Wiggins, a Canadian resident who plays at Huntington Prep (W.Va.), is rated by several basketball experts as the best high school prospect since LeBron James. Wiggins, the son of former Florida State and NBA standout Mitchell Wiggins, has narrowed his choices to Kentucky, FSU, North Carolina and Kansas, according to Huntington Prep coach Rob Fulford.

Wiggins is said to be the early favorite to be the No. 1 selection in the 2014 NBA draft.

Huntington Prep, rated the No. 1 team in the nation by MaxPreps, has a roster that also includes four Division I signees: Travon Landry (Tennessee), Xavier Rathan Mayes (Florida State), Dominic Woodson (Baylor) and Moses Kingsley (Arkansas). Huntington also features 6-4 Montague Gill Ceasar, rated as the No. 18 sophomore in the class of 2015 by one service.

Huntington Prep will face Wesleyan Christian Academy of High Point, N.C., at 7:30 p.m. in the seventh of eight scheduled games in the annual charity event. Wesleyan Christian features top 10 national recruit Theo Pinson, a 6-foot-6 junior; and one of the nation’s premier freshmen, 6-7 Harry Giles.

The final game Saturday will send Massanutten Military Academy’s postgraduate team against Blue Ridge School. Massanutten, coached by William Byrd graduate Chad Myers, has six Division I-bound players: 6-2 Deandre Burnett (Miami), 6-0 Frank Mason (Kansas), 6-5 Garland Owens (Boston College), 6-10 Damonte Dodd (Maryland), 6-5 Ahmad Fields (Utah) and 6-0 Q.J. Peterson (VMI).

The day-long event raises money for cancer research at Duke University as well as scholarships in memory of Chance Harman, the son of Floyd County boys basketball coach Brian Harman. Chance Harman died in 2007 at age 4 from a rare form of brain cancer.

The complete schedule is:

Craig County vs. Auburn, 9 a.m.
Narrows vs. Eastern Montgomery, 10:30 a.m.
George Wythe vs. Giles, noon
Carroll County vs. Christiansburg, 1:30 p.m.
