Region IV Division 4 girls game postponed
Tuesday night’s scheduled Region IV Division 4 girls basketball semifinal between Magna Vista and Carroll County has been postponed.
Magna Vista athletic director and tournament director Mike Minter said the game was postponed because of weather conditions in Carroll County. Schools were closed in Carroll County on Tuesday.
The game will be played at 6 p.m. Wednesday in at Carroll County High School, prior to the 7:45 p.m. Region IV Division 4 boys semifinal between the same two schools.
The postponement has forced other changes in the girls schedule. The Magna Vista-Carroll County winner will play Bassett at 7 p.m. Thursday in a semifinal at Magna Vista High School. Minter said it has not been determined whether the championship game will be played on Friday or Saturday.
Also, Wednesday night’s Region IV Division 4 boys game between Salem and Blacksburg will be played at Christiansburg High School. The game will begin either at 7 p.m. or 7:45 p.m., depending on the outcome of tonight’s first-round girls game between Hidden Valley and Blacksburg. If Blacksburg wins the girls game, there will be a semifinal doubleheader at Christiansburg with Salem’s girls playing the Bruins in the first game at 6 p.m., followed by the boys.
Updated pairings as of Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. are here.

Gotta love the equity of the wacky seeding system, since divisional play began in basketball in ’09. Both Salem’s boys and girls – both of whom won the district regular season, the district tourney, and are both NUMBER ONE SEEDS – get to travel to play in Blacksburg’s back yard. Against teams that have won NOTHING, and truth be told, wouldn’t be anywhere near the playoffs under any fair format. WAY TO GO, REGION IV!!! Excellent job!
So – the Hidden Valley girls won. Same deal – Salem gets to play HV at CS. Why isn’t this being played at the Salem Civic Center, the Bast Center, or Andrew Lewis? Or even at Salem High? Plenty of other teams that aren’t number one seeds get to host regional semis and finals on their own courts; somehow, that never seems to work out for Salem. Oh well – let’s just drill HV for the third time this year, and make it academic.
The sites for the semifinals and finals are predetermined, and it goes on a rotation basis among the three districts. Once the site has been established, BOTH schools have to agree to move it. I think the River Ridge has it written in their by-laws which neutral site is to be used if two district teams are involved. The higher-seeded team does not get any extra say-so in the matter. Salem Civic Center or Bast Center would be nice, but that horse is long out of the barn. The River Ridge couldn’t make money on its district tournament at Salem Civic Center and that’s why it’s no longer there, and I’m pretty sure the civic center was giving the schools a bargain on it.
Kinda like #6 HV hosting #1 Carroll County last year? I assume it’s set up well beforehand who will host.
