Good luck to Coleman.
I didn’t see that one coming. I was sure he’d choose WVU, but held out hope to stay in the area and choose Tech.
I don’t think his pop saw that one coming either. Great family. I’ve known his mom and dad for awhile and his grandparents too. Great people.
I’m happy to hear that he chose Tennessee. As a die hard UT Vols fan, I’m hoping that our football program is going to start producing championships again.
Haven’t been a lot of SWVa kids who have gone to Tennessee in recent years. Steve Knight out of Abingdon was a lineman there in there in the early 1980s. He played briefly for the Colts and later became a sheriff’s deputy in Indianapolis where one of his duties was escorting Mike Tyson in and out of the courthouse during that infamous trial. Dennis Mahan of Martinsville and Mike Keith of Rich Valley were a couple of high school superstars who went to UT but didn’t stay long. Darryal Wilson from Virginia High in Bristol played wide receiver there and later for the New England Patriots. He also ran a leg on an NCAA champion 4 x 400 meter relay team. Wilson was one of the best high school athletes I ever covered.
Good luck to Coleman.
did you cover him while at the RT, or in your prior life in Bristol?
If you mean Mike Keith, yes, he was a senior at Rich Valley High School when I first worked at the Bristol Herald Courier. I remember him scoring something like 40 points in a football playoff game. He also was a very good punter, and I believe that’s where Tennessee was giving him a look.
I’ve known Mike Keith all of my life. I’m a Rich Valley girl myself. And Robert, we also took an English class together at King College.
The Vols also just got a commitment from the #1 recruit out of TN. I think Butch Jones is going to be a good change for the program.
