Conventional wisdom says that defenses are ahead of offenses in early-season football games.
If that truly is the case, we ain’t seen nothin’ yet.
Already this season in VHSL games, eighteen teams have scored more than 60 points including one team that did it and still lost: R.E. Lee-Springfield 75, Thomas Edison 61.
Lee-Springfield’s 75 points aren’t even the most scored in a VHSL game this year. Heritage put up 76 on Patrick County in the first week, then Chatham dropped 78 on the Cougars last week.
Hampton, the state’s all-time winningest program, was on the losing end of a 65-44 romp by Woodside last week.
How’s this for an up-and-down start?
Petersburg gave up 63 points in a season-opening loss to North Stafford, then bounced back last week and scored 63 in a win over Huguenot.
After two games, seven teams have scored more than 100 points and a couple of teams that didn’t open until last week put up more than 50 in their openers.
Jefferson Forest is the state’s fifth-highest scoring team with 111 points through two games.
And remember, the running clock starts after halftime once there is a 35-point margin.
So what’s going on?
Reclassification has forced some emergency scheduling such as the Heritage-Patrick County game, but most VHSL teams statewide haven’t altered their schedules that much.
I supposed some of it can be attributed to the normal mismatches that occur, but the numbers seem to be way up in 2013.
Some of it has to be the implementation of no-huddle or spread offenses and increased passing that we’re seeing at every level of the sport.
Maybe the relaxed rules governing out-of-season practice and all the seven-on-seven camps have helped the offenses get a head start.
Whatever, points are piling up.
Score one for the defense though. Two VHSL teams have opened the season by shutting out a pair of opponents and both — Lord Botetourt and Auburn — are in Timesland.
Also, Northside has limited its first two opponents to just 93 yards total offense combined.
