Grabbing some time off and doing what else? Watching basketball at the NCAA Tournament in Lexington. Saw Davidson absolutely give one away Thursday against Marquette, whose lineup included former VHSL star Devante Gardner of King’s Fork.
Gardner knows something about comebacks, much to William Fleming’s chagrin. He was part of the King’s Fork team that overcame a 31-9 third-quarter deficit to beat Fleming in the Group AAA final in 2009.
Anyway, I was finally able to get the official Virginia High School Coaches Association boys and girls basketball teams from the office in Hampton and they are listed below.
Tay Taylor of Salem was named the Group AA Division 4 player of the year, while Rockbridge County’s Andrew Rowsey shared the Division 3 award with Brandan Stith of Brunswick.
Radford’s Rick Cormany was named Group A Division 2 boys coach of the year, while Floyd County’s Alan Cantrell was named Division 2 girls coach of the year.
The coach of the year awards are pretty much rubber-stamped for the coaches who win state tournaments. Curious that Salem’s Kevin Garst did not win the Division 4 boys award. Instead, that one went to Grafton’s Jeremy Jordan.
