Blacksburg sweeps VHSL Group AA cross country titles; Radford wins Group A boys; Link, Bethel, Mogen win individual crowns
Blacksburg put four boys among the top six finishers Saturday en route to a dominating victory in the VHSL Group AA cross country championships at Great Meadow in the The Plains.
The Bruins, led by individual champ Nick Link, had a team score of 19 as five Blacksburg runners finished in the top 14 to earn all-Group AA honors. Link’s winning time was 15 minutes, 34 seconds. Lafayette was a distant second in the team standings with 79 points.
The Blacksburg girls won the girls team championship with 86 points. Hidden Valley senior Carolyn Bethel won the girls title in 18:11, finishing 20 seconds ahead of Cave Spring junior Katie Fortner.
Walker Mogen won the Group A boys meet to lead Radford to the team championship. Mogen’s time of 16:14 was 14 seconds ahead of runner-up Brad Swiney of John Battle. Radford scored 69 points to win the team title. Parry McCluer (76) was second.
Wilson Memorial won the Group A girls title, led by individual champion Hannah Rose.
Chantilly won the Group AAA boys title. Sean McGorty of Chantilly won the AAA race with the day’s best time of 14:47.
Sophie Chase ran 17:24 to win the girls title and Lake Braddock to the Group AAA team crown.
